I was privileged to share the stage with great talents @rayner_design from @studio_drama_ltd and @santi____rey, who travelled from Spain to speak.

The ‘From Letter to Book’ exhibition of Expert Class Type Design 25/26 graduation typefaces is open for another week. EcTd is taught by @jeremytankardtypography and held at @plantininstituut EcTd students develop a new multi-weight, multi-style text typeface from research to sketches to trace drawings and finally vectors and typeface production.

Kindly hosted by @letterenhuis , entrance is free, open during weekdays at Minderbroedersstraat 22, Antwerp, Belgium

The exhibition also showcases ‘Typografie & Boek’ student book projects.

Think on paper. The delight of using pencil and paper to generate and develop ideas is something to savour. Time invested in the early stages will be rewarded later as shapes develop. Variations from sketch to screen would likely not have occurred without the trace drawings.

Slowing down to move ahead. Analogue approaches to initial development phases will reap rewards later, as much of the figuring out of shapes, the system and harmony can be explored.

Sketch hard. Vector easy. A key learning from being part of the 25/26 EcTd cohort led by @jeremytankardtypography held at @plantininstituut

Time invested in sketching (different approaches to sketching type do exist) the direction of types on paper and iterating with trace might appear old school, but thinking on paper can be faster than on screen for complex visual issues. Also an invaluable process when vector characters are not quite right, especially on some of the more complex characters – step forwards ampersand (&).

Type in progress. Beneath the surface of typography, invisible systems are at work, a Crystal Goblet holding content as Beatrice Warde once described it.

Inside a typeface, there are even more elements at play that work in harmony when approached in a structured manner. The Expert Class Type Design from the @plantininstituut serves as a finishing school for typeface designers under the guidance of @jeremytankardtypography .Students take a deep dive into the development of commercial multi-weight and style text typefaces.

It has been a pleasure to be a student in the EcTd 25/26 cohort. Thank you.

Good Design is Good Business. Certainly, the case with the custom type that Banks and Miles created decades ago for @royalmailofficial that is still going strong.

The ROI on this typeface is off the scale. Yes, it has been tweaked over time; it now uses a Van Krimpen U (the same skeleton form as a lowercase /u enlarged). It also moves away from its original classical Imperial Roman proportions; the /E is wider and squarer in proportions. These are arguably stylistic refinements; the core idea and visual execution remain. More importantly, to the great British public, it has not changed since it was first used, a familiar look that has endured and it's seen on post boxes and delivery vehicles to this day.

Less is more is certainly the case with this 12pt piece of type. Measuring less than 5mm wide, @bymonotype in 1960 had the technical ability to reproduce the Lord's Prayer, at a size the human eye cannot perceive, let alone read.

A great find from @stbridefoundation 2026 Wayzgoose.

When in Berlin, Eszett is the way. A collection of Eszett found in directional street signs and information graphics from the streets of Berlin.

The range of solutions adopted demonstrates the broad acceptance and latitude when exploring letterforms for new types.
