TW : Sexual Assault

I'm sorry to anyone who's feeling triggered by the news circulating of the assault at Cornell. I would be lying if I said I wasn't.

In my lifetime I've been both a victim of sexual violence and a support system to others who have experienced sexual violence.

I'm lucky to also be able to say I am a survivor of sexual violence because to me it means I'm alive and brave enough to say I am a victim out loud.

I hope as we share 🙏 we remember to have compassion for the folks who live with the reality of surviving sexual assault.

I hope we remember the power of our words and the importance of the language we use while supporting survivors.

I hope we realize the unity that can be found within both our shared and collective trauma, however messed up that may be, and that it can be used to help others seek support for their experience if we have the will to use it for that purpose.

I hope we remember that it's our duty to believe victims and to support anyone strong enough vocalize their experience and seek justice for such a horrific and unspeakable crime.

I also hope we remember that most instances of assault go unreported, and of those cases that are reported, very few victims experience anything that resembles accountability or justice.

Per the CDC:

Sexual violence is common in the United States.

The latest data shows:

Nearly half of women and more than 1 in 6 men experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetimes.

🎂 🥳 Happy Birthday @kalexamitchell

I tend to call my closest friends my best friends, my sisters, my family, but with Alexa, she's my little sister and her Mom is my second Momma. I think a lot of folks relate to that, or, at least I hope they do.

Alexa and I became friends immediately after meeting. It's funny because we are so different and somehow tend to draw the same conclusions when we reflect on our lives, morals and values.

Something I think enhances our bond is that we both grew up with single Mommas. I think we drift closer to each other, and understand each other, in a special way because we need a support system in ways that single Mom kids do. Its a special bond. If you know, you know. Its interesting but the older I get the less I meet other women who grew up with a single Mom. Its more rare than I realized.

I think it makes your bond with other women in general that much more special. You understand in a very unique way the weight women carry and the power they possess. You also understand the world they endure from a different and more forgiving perspective. The world isn't easy for women, I don't care how much progress we've made, or think we've made. It makes you a champion for women and their freedom to be who they want to be amd it allows you to accept them for who they choose to be without much questioning.

Alexa is one of the strongest, kindest, most surprising, and interesting women I know. We've danced at concerts, cuddled on sofas, hugged each other and been there to support one another through some of the darkest and brightest days.

I admire this cowgirl so much and I am so grateful the world introduced us to one another. My hope for the world is that every single one of us find an Alexa to share our life with. Friendhsip that is dynamic, challenging, fulling, and sacred. I am so grateful we've been able to stand beside each other through this wild ride of life. It hasn't always been an easy ride, but we've done our best to meet every challenge with triumph and gratitude for the good days.
