Debut album by Best Foot Forward -what it is, what it is... is out today.

I’ve known Myka since around about 2008 - cap always down at the kit, drumming in my favourite bands and between the shows painting, mixing media, sharing obscure shit.

On a rare occasion I’d hear some beats…smokey, warped, haunted music.

Once at Nightcat there was about a 30 minute set of neck snappers, beats that hit like a sample pad falling down a NY fire escape staircase with guitar riffs distorted into a cloud of buzzing wasps… that was like ’….what… the…actual… fuck… Myka’ I need this music.

Fast forward, probably 3 years, I finally get a 45 minute one track mix which I proceed to listen to in an black out in an empty house on a UE boom during a lightning storm at the top of Queensland summer.
That shit was cursed good.

If I’ve only learned one thing it’s HOW you listen to music near as important to WHAT you listen to.

This album, mixtape (?) really came to life when I’d listen in the in-between moments of my life - full of self doubt, unsureness, stuck or lost - it didn’t provide me with any answers but it spoke to that dark unknowing. This world went deeper, it went more dissonant, melancholic and playful shadows.
My favourite ride at the carnival has always been the haunted house, the sounds, scares and anticipation - yet it always falls short. It’s just a drunk kid with a mask and fake axe and 1/2 built animatronics.

‘what it is, what it is..’ delivers all the boombap rap oujii board fantasies I had as a young stoner and then continues to descend into spaces of everyday magik. Harps, bones, moans, groans, trains, ricochets, comets, dirt, attics, bugs, electricity wires, steam engines, golden hammers and secret ways of looking. I love this alchemy of sound that has taken place - slowly, grown late at night, in small portions, piece by piece until a record had been laced together. Luminously visible soul echos, seen once you are closed eyed with headphones and succumb to a strong will to fall in. by @bestfootforward
