Today my album “Every Little Fire” is released into the world. I sometimes think about how the role of the artist is to light a torch which is then thrown into the collective void that it may illuminate the surroundings briefly and provide some hope, light and direction to those who witness it, before it is eventually swallowed by the great nothingness. One torch by itself only providing so much light but collectively the illumination is powerful. And so here I stand about to release this torch from my grip, that it may be taken by the natural forces, that it may lessen the shadows, that it may twinkle in the eyes of those who have come to watch the cascade of all these little fires.

This album is an outward expression of all the life I’ve lived over the last 5-6 years, and so spans Covid, babies, old houses, new houses, international moves, new lives, loss, grief, love, fatigue. It’s sat in the background patiently watching me as I ran around like a madman, an actually insane person, trying to get some purchase on his own life. It waited until, in my not knowing what do to do next, I would pick up a guitar, or notepad or sit at the keyboard. It was in no rush to finish itself. It helped me find and remember the joy in making, the child-like satisfaction in a creative process (and not the product). It helped me remember that I have something to say.

Thank you as always for your love and support of this project, and for reminding me of your love and support when I often forget it, and for the messages of how the music has helped you in some way, being a soundtrack to your joys and griefs. This music is yours now x

One year ago today this album came out.

Two days ago it got nominated for an ARIA..

I’m sure I’ve made it clear how fraught the journey of releasing it was, but this post isn’t about that. This is about the beautiful moments that were spent with beautiful people, developing and performing these shows and recording this album.

I’m gonna say my thank yous now cause I’m 0 for 5 on Aria nominations 😂 and I’d like YOU all to know who’s behind the good parts (not just the negative ones).

So thank you first and foremost to Jamie Messenger @the_mess for your stunning arrangements. I will never get over hearing my songs played by an orchestra. And you sir, did a most spectacular job of bringing that all to life. I cannot thank you enough.

Order a vinyl from our online shop, your favourite record store or on tour, and you could be lucky enough to own a little slice of the original album artwork.

The artwork was the brainchild of Tom Iansek, created using polaroid photos taken by Van Bartel, which Myka Wallace then painted over and arranged by Simoen van der Meent. NOW Tom has signed and numbered 13 of them, and they’ll be randomly placed into the First Pressing Burnt Orange Regrind Vinyl by @programrecords before being shipped to us ahead of distribution. We also have no idea which 13 LPs hold the signed Polaroid. Good luck! 🔥
