Had a blast remote operating our @freeflysystems MōVi Pro for DP @robby_sabi on several awesome grip rigs courtesy of @ragtag.grip including a Mitchell adapted ice skating speedrail dolly and an overhead cable cam pipe rig for the ‘NHL - Puck Rush’ for @nhl & @nexplayground.

Some of the edits go by quick so let me know if you want a better look at any of the rigs and we can try and hunt down some longer dailies and do some full length splitscreens! (Also shoutout to our @backpack_rig #StayPuffed kit for keeping us powered up without a battery swap)

Saving the world with our Gipsy Danger figure from @infinitystudiocn. Standing at 12.6 in (32cm) this model features over 120 points of articulation including multiple hand and weapon configurations to take on any Kaiju threat along with built-in LEDs and a motorized rotating core. Gipsy is the 3rd figure in the line from @gdtreal’s award winning @pacificrimmovie and was preceded by Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon collectibles which are already fighting to close The Breach. Reinforcements are on the way with the 4th addition to the set, the upcoming Striker Eureka, available for pre-order now.

The opposite of traveling light… landing on set with a full @motorizedprecision Colossus robot kit for a recent shoot for our friends at @artandcommerce. Most of instagram is a highlight reel, but it’s always fun to peek behind the scenes and see what goes into a big production. Believe it or not, this is the most compact this kit has ever been, as we’ve been taking the time to condense and optimize all the individual components to make setting up as fast and efficient as possible. Now if only we had an inside track on a teleporter…

To more evenly balance our gimbal, we use small screw-in weights that attach directly to the camera rig. These are essentially telescope counterweights, and they happen to share the same thread size as most camera plates. They’re especially useful when a build’s center of gravity falls in an awkward spot—most often to offset a heavy lens.

Modern camera bodies are so light that a fully loaded rig—with a heavy lens, lens motors, and a mattebox—can shift the center of gravity so far forward that the back of the camera ends up hitting the gimbal’s rear bar during balancing. On the flip side, with a very lightweight lens, the center of gravity can drift too far back. That pushes the rig so far forward on the rails that the dovetail plate has too little contact with the gimbal to stay secure.

While you could theoretically reposition the connecting plates to compensate, that’s often not practical—screw points may be in the way, or a fan exhaust might be blocked. By using counterweights to keep the center of gravity near the lens mount, we can fly heavier, more complex builds with much better stability.

Robot arms are honestly amazing for getting cameras into really detailed sets like this. We needed a shot that travels up this river of light and lands on the spirits at the head of the table. The Colossus made it so much easier than we thought it would be.
