A clip from @hasanminhaj’s YouTube channel, the intro to the documentary directed by @smritimundhra!! The documentary follows two dance teams, @utdraftaar and @utdlaksh as they run their season with a goal to compete in @ddnlegends 💜

It is also serving as a way to fundraise for @ddnlegends, to ensure @desi_dance_network can continue to host the most anticipated dance competition of the year.

This documentary truly captures the essence of what being on a competitive Desi dance team is like, and we’re so grateful to have had a part in setting the stage for the current circuit.

If you haven’t seen this yet or Best of the Best directed by @imlenakhan and written by @prashanthvenkat and @hasanminhaj, definitely add to your watch list to catch this weekend!

Thank you to every dancer who took the stage, every sponsor and volunteer who helped make it possible, and every fan who filled those sold-out auditoriums between 2005 and 2012. You didn’t just dance, you built a legacy. 🧡🏆

Who remembers the “Sh*t XYZ group says” trend from back in 2012? We aired the first one for South Asian dance teams featuring the one and only @vmony_ .

Filmed by @samsneedwanp and edited by @nainiac !

How much of this still rings true @ddnlegends??

We stood on the shoulders of dance competitions before us, like FOGANA, Bhangra Blowout and Bollywood Fusion. It’s incredible to see where @ddnlegends has taken the dance circuit and how it evolved from Bollywood America, Elite 8 Bhangra and of course @bestofthebestdancecomp 🧡🏆

In 2012, we built a second stage. For the first time ever, high school Bhangra, Bollywood, and Gujarati Folk teams from across the country came to Washington, DC to compete for the title of Best of the Best.

Huge love to every team who took the stage: DCMPAA, First Class Bhangra, Gajdi Jawani, India Performing Arts Center, Nartan Dance Academy, Nrutya Shruti, DxD Desi Dance Team, NJ’s Dhadkan, and Raaga Dance Company.

And your winners:
👑 Nrutya Shruti, Gujarati Folk Category + Overall Best of the Best
🔥 First Class Bhangra, Bhangra Category
💥 NJ’s Dhadkan, Bollywood Category

Also we are grateful to have been a stage for a name you might recognize now 👀
✨ @shreya_navile danced with Raaga Dance Company that night, years before playing Deepica in Netflix’s Best of the Best

@raashikulkarni, now an LA-based film and TV composer, played our special act
@thisisamitshah of AATMA Performing Arts and Mystic India served as Overall Judge

Were you there? Competing, judging, volunteering, cheering from the seats? Fill out the form in our bio so we can tag you as we keep digging through 2005-2012 🧡

In 2012, the BOB family grew. 💫

When we launched BOB Juniors, we had one clear goal: pass the torch to the next generation of dancers.

We wanted to build a bridge—taking the energy, passion, and high-caliber stage experience of Best of the Best and opening those doors to high school dancers who were ready to shine. Watching youth teams bring that same fire, dedication, and heart to the stage proved that the future of dance was in good hands.

To everyone who was part of that launch year and every Junior dancer who has graced our stage since—thank you for keeping the legacy alive!

2012 kept us right where it all started: New York City.

Who was there: FAUJ Bhangra, Michigan Bhangra Team, UCONN Husky Bhangra, SLU Raas, UC Riverside Raas, UIUC Illini Retro Raas, UC Dhadak, UCLA Nashaa, and UC SD Zor.

@raaginder brought a live violin-and-tabla special act to the stage, and the weekend had a FlashBOB, a full flash mob in the middle of NYC.

The judges: Anishee Shah and Amish Jani for Raas-Garba, Gopi Engineer and Rohan Oza for Bollywood/Fusion, Jesse Malik and Lilly Singh for Bhangra, and Kajal Desai as Overall Judge.
And when the trophies came out: UCLA Nashaa took Bollywood/Fusion AND the overall win, Michigan Bhangra Team took Bhangra, and UIUC Illini Retro Raas took Raas-Garba 🏆
