Kicking off this week with some heartfelt BTS memories from a year ago yesterday, the hallowed Clams In Their Eyes 2024.

So for #thepatternchallengebymel prompt ISLAND, I've veered off in a slightly different direction 😁 it may not be tropical, but it's v. interesting!

The first islands I think of is Ireland as it's where the majority of my family are from... and one of my favourite Irish symbols is the Sheela na Gig!

Sheelas are pre-Christian stone carvings of women (in particular older women, we love a #powernan) crouching down and flashin' some gloriously exaggerated vulvas 💚 Their purpose has been widely debated, with theories claiming that they're either talismans to protect from evil, warnings of the dangers of lust (and the 'evils of women' ...spot the start of Christianity 😂), fertility symbols or that they are visual representations of the land itself.

Either way, they're powerful symbols of unashamed female strength and sexuality - and I love 'em. So my ISLAND pattern is a host of technicolour Sheela na Gigs! I've also noticed that the smaller the pattern, the more I think the shapes (especially the legs) reference Celtic Knotwork... can you see it too?

And to anyone interested in Sheelas, I'd HIGHLY recommend looking them up, there's too much to cover in just one insta caption! And go check out @projectsheela - where some amazing modern Sheelas are popping up in Dublin in some significant sites of Irish Womens' History.
