Ecce Shnak is bombastically stoked to present ‘Anna O’ (https://youtu.be/DVPS-bqT63k or link in bio), the 3rd single from our upcoming full-length record ‘Dandy Variances’, slated for release October 23. We hope it offers a raucous 1st taste of the sonic unruliness in store on the album.

People who shnak with Ecce Shnak, Nirvana, the Pixies, and the Jesus Lizard will find it a jump-off-the-couch, roaring-the-hook anthem with big grunge energy. Our baritone, bassist, and composer Davey Roush (@dayvshnak) worked with his very talented mama, Robin Kneubuhl on the lyric! She wrote a poem months before Davey and friend/producer/shnakducer par excellence, Jeff Lucci (@wavegreeting) cooked up a noisy instrumental in March 2019. Davey and Jeffie tried the poem out as a lyric, and it fit just right. Several years later, we’re friqq’n ✨finally✨ dropping it for you with a mix courtesy of the inimitably dope Mario McNulty (@mariojmcnulty) and a master by the masterfully magnificent Kris Crummett (@kcrummet)

Davey’s mama described her poem as “a lament about tragic contradictions in contemporary feminist thought and practice.” The song’s heroine embodies both a noteworthy psychoanalytic patient of Freud’s protégé Josef Breuer known by her pseudonym Anna O and the real-life gun-slinging heroine Annie Oakley. Though Anna is beleaguered by these contradictions, she ultimately emerges triumphant in the fight against patriarchy by the song’s end.

Our soprano, the one, good, and venerable Bella Komodromos (@bellalitsa), plays the role of Anna, who is deeply distressed in captivity, as she seems wrongfully entrapped in an asylum. However, through an act of heroic resistance, she overthrows her abusive doctor and his servile aide. She sets herself free while the mighty rock band Ecce Shnak plays her homage as loudly and wildly as they can.

Today, two (sh)artistic universes SYNTHESIZE!

Art-rock quintet Ecce Shnak and shart-rock comedic duo Syd and Olivia ¡UNLEASH! (🙄🤦🏻‍♂️😒😏😉) our collaboration on the music video for Ecce Shnak’s new single, “Eddie, Legalistic Homeslice.”

Ecce Shnak is overjoyed to release “Eddie, Legalistic Homeslice,” our second single from our upcoming album, “Dandy Variances.” Like “Larry, Sleepover Friend” from our 2019 EP “Joke Oso,” our new song is a garage-rock homage to a beloved friend of our baritone/bassist/composer Davey. “Eddie” explores big themes in great friendships: their gnarly ambivalences, their absurd misunderstandings, their inside-jokes, and their contradictory mix of irreverence with utmost care. The song reaches its lyrical denouement with what is said to be the “oldest prayer of friendship,” and also sounds like a throwaway Rivers Cuomo line: “I pray you don’t be a rat in a rat-suit! Pray you don’t be a rat in a rat-costume!”

And yeah, back to this collaboration, Ecce Shnak is overjoyed to feature two great friends as the co-stars of the music video, the preposterously funny and talented comedic duo Syd and Olivia! Our Davey was lucky to have met these two pugnaciously podcasting, thoughtfully Thespian, joke-slinging YouTube yokels on a fantastic journey to the Greek island of Crete two years ago with 10 other magnificent friends, and the rest was thirst’ory! Syd and Olivia kicked every butt possible at their roles (as Eddie and Davey respectively) in the Wes-Anderson-hued buddy-comedy music video masterfully directed and produced by DJay Brawner and his crew (@djaybrawner). It is our ardent hope that all fans of Ecce Shnak and Syd and Olivia alike can shart out with their hearts out to this badass collaboration!
