What does it take to turn your creative practice into opportunities on a global stage?

Our next conference guest, Carole K Millar, has the answer! 🧵🎬

Carole @costumedbycarolekay is a Scottish costume designer and a fiercely proud Glaswegian, whose work is deeply rooted in the stories, identities, and lived experiences of real people. Across film, television, theatre and events, she is known for creating authentic, character-driven costumes that reflect the truth, nuance and individuality of the worlds she builds.

Her film credits include California Schemin’, the directorial debut from James McAvoy, which screened at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, and Glenrothan, directed by Brian Cox, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. In TV, Carole designed the original HBO series Half Man, created by Emmy award-winner Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Carole also designed Laura Carreira’s acclaimed feature On Falling, as well as the BBC/Two Brothers series Dinosaur, Granite Harbour and Lovesick for Netflix. Most recently, she collaborated with Synchronicity Films on the anticipated Channel 4 drama Careless, Rhino for Sixteen Films, Synchronicity Films TV drama The Young Team, and The Opening Ceremony of Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.

Grounded in her Scottish heritage, Carole brings a distinctive voice to her work-championing realism, emotional honesty, and the power of costume to tell human stories with depth and integrity.

In this conversation, we’ll explore building relationships and developing your creative reputation, navigating opportunities across different industries, as well as what it really takes to grow a creative career while staying true to your creative voice.

Be United x @cinetopiahub have collaborated on a special screening of Franco Rosso’s urgent reggae drama Babylon (1980). Curated by guest programmer @mumu._.chinake , featuring a live musical performance by @ruecooper and @michaelfallemann_ .

This event is part of Cinetopia’s Transmission: Youth Across Generations program, exploring youth culture in Britain across the decades.

Set in Thatcher-era 1980s South London, Franco Rossi’s Babylon follows Blue, a young Jamaican sound system DJ in Brixton, as he and his crew prepare for a major sound system competition. Set to an iconic soundtrack by Dennis Bovell, music helps drive the narrative as Blue navigates a world of racism, police brutality, and systemic oppression, delivering an uncompromising look at Black British youth in the 1980s.

Following the film, enjoy a live interactive performance titled, “We Can’t Tek No More of That”, Sound as Resistance and Healing, by Bahamian singer-songwriter Rue Cooper, accompanied by guitarist Michael Fallemann.

TWO MORE SESSIONS ANNOUNCED 👀

We’re continuing to reveal the programme for the Creative Partnerships Conference: Rooted and Rising - and these next two sessions are all about having honest, open conversations around some of the things that matter most to creatives right now.

🎤 Solid Ground: What Freelancers Need to Know
What does it actually take to navigate freelance work and build a sustainable creative career?
This open, conversation-led session is a chance to get practical advice, ask questions and explore the realities of working freelance.

The session is led by Anupa Joshy, a Freelance Designer working across brand identity, editorial, data visualisation and illustration. Originally from India and trained at The Glasgow School of Art, she works with cultural institutions and funded organisations across Scotland, including the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Scottish Refugee Council. Alongside her client practice, she founded Colour Theory, a platform that celebrates and spotlights BPOC creatives in Scotland, through which they run events, exhibitions, and community programming. She speaks regularly at creative events on representation, inclusive design and building a practice as a designer of colour.

🎶 AI & Music: Using AI Responsibly to Further Your Career
AI is changing the music industry but what does that actually mean for artists and songwriters?
In this session, we’ll explore how AI is affecting the industry, where the opportunities are, what the risks are, and how artists can think about using these tools responsibly to support and further their careers.

The speaker for this session, Gordon Johnstone, is a musician, writer, and speaker based in Edinburgh. He’s one half of the band Post Coal Prom Queen and works in the fields of AI ethics and AI literacy at the Edinburgh Futures Institute.

What does it mean to create sustainably? 🍃

For our next Rooted & Rising workshop, we’re bringing a speaker Caro Overy, Green Arts Manager at the @ccscotland. “Rooted in Practice: Creating Sustainably” is a conversation exploring sustainable creative practice and ways that artists and wider creative organisations and industries can respond to the climate crisis. It will discuss practical ideas and how sustainability can be practiced in creative work.

The session will also feature a live spoken-word performance for ACE V!S!ON, who will also be performing throughout the day. 🎤

ACE V!S!ON is a non-binary Scottish-Malawian poet, musician, and actor whose lyrical prowess and powerful yet nuanced delivery leaves a lasting impression. Moving fluidly between witty rap, poignant poetry, and subtle vocal expression, their work has been shaped through years of creating within the Glasgow arts scene.

Come ready to reflect, question and think about what sustainable creative practice could look like for you.

First two workshops announced!! 🎉

By popular demand, we’ve brought in the experts to speak on marketing, branding and PR. Meet the first speakers of Day 1 of Creative Partnerships Conference: Rooted & Rising. 🌱

Rooted is all about understanding yourself and your creative practice - and for some, it starts with understanding your brand and making your voice heard.

We’re extremely excited to have Leah Bauer, Head of Marketing and Events at The List, lead “Make Your Voice Heard: How to Pitch Your Idea to the Media”, where all attendees will learn about the do’s and don’ts of pitching to the media and get to put their freshly learned knowledge into practice. 🎤

And our Events and Programmes Coordinator, Serena Piotto @blueberrymeninskirts , who is not only a powerhouse mentor to our Producing the Future participants, but also a marketing and media specialist with extensive knowledge of brand building.

She’ll be leading “Building Your Creative Brand” - a workshop designed to help you understand, shape and own your creative brand. ✨

As Serena says: “Whether you are aware of it or not, you have a brand. We all do - and it’s time to own it.”
