Meet the person behind The Listener. 👋

Jideofor created The Listener to explore the stories, people and histories connected to Glasgow’s Merchant City.

But this isn’t just about looking at the past.

It’s about listening, questioning and having conversations about the city we share.

Muratiwa Chinake (@mumu._.chinake) is a Zimbabwean filmmaker, curator and marketing professional based in Glasgow, and is curating the third screening in our Transmission: Youth Across Generations multi-event programme:

Babylon (1980), presented with @beunitedworld followed by "We 'Can't Tek No More' of That", a live interactive musical performance from @ruecooper and @michaelfallemann_ at @thevoodoorooms, Tuesday 13 October, doors 7pm.

Franco Rosso's cult classic follows a young Jamaican sound system DJ in Thatcher-era Brixton, and was banned from US screens on release for being "too controversial".

On their choice of film, Muratiwa says: "I selected Babylon because I loved that the film focuses not only on the music but also on the political conversation surrounding Black British youth during Thatcherism.

The film is unapologetic in nature, which has helped it remain a cult classic, as the social injustices it highlights still resonate in the UK today. Its characters share relatable traits like striving to get further in their career, building a home and community and just finding a place to belong.

Thus, pairing the film with a live music performance and archives helps bridge the past, present, and future, showing how sound can be used as a vehicle for intergenerational resistance and healing."

Tickets are available via the link in our bio. 🎟 We hope to see you there!

A big week for cinema across Scotland! 🎬

The BFI London Film Festival heads into its final days with Cannes favourites Fatherland and Club Kid, screening at @filmhouse_edinburgh and @glasgowfilmtheatre, while Venice Special Jury Prize winner NAZA comes to @thecameocinema for a special screening and Q&A.

Elsewhere, Hammer’s Dracula returns in a landmark 4K restoration featuring long-lost footage at @filmhouse_edinburgh, alongside experimental filmmaking at DV8’s Obsolete Media Showcase in Glasgow, Harold Lloyd’s Speedy with live piano at the Hippodrome in Bo’ness, and Franco Rosso’s cult classic Babylon with live music at Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms.

We’re also recommending Horace Ové’s groundbreaking Pressure alongside Black Wool at @glasgowfilmtheatre, the beloved queer comedy The Birdcage at @grassmarketpicturehouse, and Leith Kino’s wonderfully offbeat Pepos at @leithkino.

From new discoveries to cult classics, politically engaged cinema to the gloriously strange, there’s plenty worth getting out to see this week.

Swipe through for our picks! Full listings, screening details and booking links in this week’s Cinetopia Recommends newsletter, linked above.

BABYLON (1980). ONE NIGHT ONLY IN EDINBURGH.

Sound system culture. Roots reggae. Resistance.

Franco Rosso’s BABYLON is one of the defining films of Black British cinema. Set against the racial tensions of late-1970s London, it follows Blue (Brinsley Forde of Aswad) and his South London reggae sound system as music, community and defiance collide.

Raw, uncompromising and driven by a legendary soundtrack from Dennis Bovell, BABYLON was made to be experienced loud.

Tomorrow night, we’re bringing it to The Voodoo Rooms.

Presented by Be United (@beunitedworld) × Cinetopia, with guest curation by Muratiwa Chinake (@mumu._.chinake )

Following the screening, Rue Cooper (@ruecooper ) and Michael Fallemann (@michaelfallemann_ ) take us into a live musical performance exploring sound as resistance and healing.

TUESDAY 13 OCTOBER
The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh
Doors 7pm | Film 7:15pm

46 YEARS LATER.

Franco Rosso’s BABYLON (1980) takes us deep into South London’s reggae sound system culture, following Blue (Brinsley Forde of Aswad) and his crew as they prepare for a major sound system competition while navigating racism, police brutality and systemic oppression in Thatcher-era Britain.

Raw, uncompromising and driven by Dennis Bovell’s iconic soundtrack, BABYLON is a film that demands to be seen and heard on the big screen.

Be United (@beunitedworld ) x Cinetopia present this special screening, with guest programmer Muratiwa Chinake @mumu._.chinake followed by “We ‘Can’t Tek No More’ of That”: Sound as Resistance and Healing, a live interactive musical performance by Bahamian singer-songwriter Rue Cooper @ruecooper , accompanied by guitarist Michael Fallemann.

Through live music and audience participation, the performance explores sound as a vehicle for resistance, collective healing and connection across generations.

Tuesday 13 October | The Voodoo Rooms @thevoodoorooms , Edinburgh
Doors: 7pm | Film: 7:15pm | Live Performance: 9pm

🎟️ Tickets via link in bio!

Please note: This is an 18+ venue. Film rated 15.

This screening is part of Cinetopia’s TRANSMISSION: YOUTH ACROSS GENERATIONS, a multi-event programme exploring how youth culture has shaped identity, belonging and collective memory in Britain from the 1980s to the present.

TRANSMISSION is part of Rip It Up, supported by Film Hub Scotland as part of the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN), made possible by the National Lottery.
