🟩 Bevill State student receives Building Futures Scholarship 🟦

Ervin Smith, a student in Bevill State Community College’s HVACR program in Sumiton, recently received the Building Futures Scholarship.

The Alabama Community College System and the Alabama Association of Resource Conservation, & Development Councils (RCD) awarded Building Futures Scholarships for the first time this year. Approximately 50 students enrolled in the Alabama Community College System received a $2,000 scholarship to cover tuition, books, and fees. Traditional, non-traditional, and veteran students pursuing degrees in aviation mechanics, avionics, construction management, welding and pipefitting, HVACR, carpentry, electrical, or plumbing were eligible for the scholarship.

Smith’s scholarship was presented through the Cawaco Resource Conservation & Development Council to support his studies in Bevill State’s HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration) program.

Smith is a retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class and said he has more than two decades of experience leading maintenance operations, managing motor pool logistics, and training soldiers in advanced mechanical repair. He later earned an associate degree in Business Administration and Management and worked as a senior technician and security officer.

💙 Program Spotlight: Bevill State Truck Driving 💚

Bevill State Community College is producing the next generation of truck drivers on the Sumiton campus.

Day and night classes offer flexibility for working individuals or those with children. Scholarships are available for the program, and some free training options are offered through Bevill State's Adult Education program.

Prospective students must be 18 or older, with a valid driver’s license.

Classes are offered in several sessions throughout the year, with day classes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and night classes from 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s a six-week program.

💚 Student Spotlight: Landis Cannon 💙

Landis Cannon is a recent graduate of Fayette County High School and is currently enrolled in Bevill State Community College’s HVAC Fast Track program.

“One of my teachers encouraged me to look into the program. I learned about career paths in HVAC and potential salaries. It is a perfect choice for my goal to build a better future for my family,” Cannon said.

Cannon said he has most enjoyed learning about the various in-field experiences of his instructors. He plans to begin a career in commercial HVAC after graduation.

Employee Spotlight: Richard Mathura

Richard Mathura joined the Bevill State Community College family in November 2025 as the new system-wide police chief.

The Navy veteran from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, has called Walker County home for many years and was well-known as a member of the Jasper Police Department. However, before he made his way to Walker County, service to our country came first.

“I joined the Navy, and the Navy is what brought me stateside,” he said. “I did 10 years active duty, and I just hit 15 years on the reserve side, so I’ve got a total of 25 years of service.”

He is currently a Command Master Chief Petty Officer for the U.S. Navy Reserve, the most senior enlisted leader in a U.S. Navy command, according to the U.S. Naval Institute.

It’s Mathura’s job to supervise security on the Jasper, Sumiton, Fayette and Hamilton campuses of Bevill State, but he said each campus still has its own supervisors and officers. He determines how security operations can be improved, orchestrates policy updates, and makes a point to regularly interact with students, faculty, and staff.

Meet Abby Kirby, a recent graduate of Dora High School and an incoming Bevill State student!

Abby chose Bevill State because it is close to home and offers a highly successful nursing program. After earning her associate degree, she plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing before achieving her goal of becoming an ICU nurse.
