The City of Jasper is proud to be a part of the Carl Elliott Institute, an investment in the next generation of leaders in our community.

Through our partnership with Bevill State Community College, the Walker Area Community Foundation, and the Walker College Foundation, the Carl Elliott Institute gives Bevill State students opportunities to develop their leadership skills, engage with community leaders, explore issues facing our area, and put those experiences into action through meaningful community projects.

This past weekend, this year’s Carl Elliott Institute Scholars had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2026 Gloria and John L. Blackburn Academic Symposium at The University of Alabama. The annual two-day symposium brings together students, Fellows, advisory board members, and community and state leaders for speakers, discussions, and conversations centered on leadership and the future of Alabama.

What a privilege for these young leaders to begin their year with an experience like this, learning alongside people from across our state and seeing firsthand the impact that thoughtful, engaged leadership can have on a community.

We are grateful for the partners who make the Carl Elliott Institute possible and proud to play a role in creating opportunities that encourage talented young people to lead, serve, and invest in the future of Jasper and Walker County.

What a great morning with the outstanding team at the Marion County Schools Back-to-School Institute!

As a new school year begins, it’s a reminder that every person in a school system has the opportunity to change the trajectory of a child’s life. Whether you’re a teacher, principal, counselor, instructional aide, bus driver, child nutrition professional, custodian, maintenance worker, technology specialist, office staff member, librarian, career coach, school resource officer, or part of the central office team, your work matters. Every interaction, every encouraging word, and every act of service helps create an environment where students can learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

Thank you to Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sutton for the invitation and for his commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for Marion County students. It was also great catching up with former School Superintendents of Alabama Executive Director and former Marion County superintendent, Ryan Hollingsworth.

I also enjoyed a tour of the new Agriculture Center and learning more about the outstanding partnership between Marion County Schools and Bevill State Community College. Thank you to Dr. Sutton and Bevill State President Dr. Joel Hagood for sharing their vision. Investments like these, combined with strong partnerships, are preparing students not just for graduation, but for successful careers and brighter futures.

Here’s to an incredible school year ahead. The impact you make this year will be felt not only in your classrooms and schools, but in the lives of students, their families, their communities, and ultimately the future of Alabama.

Big moves and even bigger accomplishments! 🚀✨

A massive congratulations to Julianna Otts on officially completing the Launchpad summer bridge program! 🎓🎉

Making the jump as a transfer student from Bevill State Community College, Julianna is taking her next big step as an Elementary Education major! 🍎✏️ From putting in the hard work day in and day out to preparing to shape young minds, her dedication and passion shine through in everything she does.

This is just the beginning of an incredible new chapter, and we know she’s going to make an unforgettable impact on her future classroom! 🌟 The Launchpad summer bridge is an online course designed to help bridge the gap for students who are new to The W. It gives them the tools to be successful in the classroom, digitally, personally and professionally. BONUS: the first students to complete the bridge get this awesome book bag! 🎒

We’re so proud of you, Julianna! Keep shining and reaching for the stars! 💙

Drop a 👏 or a ❤️ in the comments to help us celebrate her achievement!

Honored to gather this morning with leaders from Alabama’s local museums, historic sites, and cultural centers from around the state. The day has been a chance for folks to network and learn what’s working for each other when it comes to everything from marketing, tourism, and finding new audiences to advocacy, historic preservation, and government relations.

Communities represented the breadth and width of Alabama, too: Auburn, Bessemer, Columbiana, Cullman, Danville, Dothan, Jasper, Florence, Monroeville, Montevallo, Opelika, Pell City, Springville, Tuscaloosa, Tuscumbia, Union Springs, and more. We even allowed in folks from Birmingham, Montgomery, and Huntsville. :)

Alabama Humanities is on hand to help publicize some of our own statewide resources. Our grants director, Graydon Rust, shared about AHA’s monthly grant offerings, and we’re following up the workshop with an introduction to our Healing History initiative.

Big shoutout to Auburn University’s Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities for their leadership on this gathering, especially the Center’s director, Dr. Mark Wilson. Our other partners on the event included the Alabama Department of Archives & History, Alabama Historical Association, and our hosts at Bevill State Community College.

Join us in June!

We’ve got America at 250 talks. Juneteenth grantee events. Alabama students at National History Day. And an exciting archaeology presentation about recent finds under the soil of Bellingrath Gardens!

You can find us just about everywhere this month: From points north (Huntsville, Mentone), south (Elba, Theodore, St. Stephens), east (Anniston, Heflin), and west (Jasper, Monroeville).

Two AHA programs to note:
On June 16, Alabama Humanities will co-host a Local Museum Workshop at Bevill State Community College. This is a chance for staff and volunteers from Alabama museums, cultural centers, and historic sites to come network, learn from their colleagues, and hear about grant offerings and more from Alabama Humanities.

We’ll follow the above workshop with a separate afternoon program: PastForward: Healing Circle. This is a participatory introduction to AHA’s Healing History initiative. We hope you’ll join us!

Finally, on June 26, the first of our Smithsonian collaborations for America at 250 launches in Lower Alabama. In Washington County (the first county of Alabama!), a locally customized version of the national ‘Many Voices, One Nation’ exhibit opens at the Old St. Stephens Courthouse. Created in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street and Chatom’s Washington County Museum. This opening program runs from 2-6pm on June 26, kicking off the Fourth of July season.
