It’s been a long time coming, but we’re excited to release the first promo for our documentary featuring one of North Carolina’s most influential — yet under-recognized — climbing legends: Tom Howard.

Tom grew up right here in NC and has quietly shaped the climbing scene for decades. He’s put up over 100 first ascents across the state, including classics like Zoo View, Edge of a Dream, Ooga Chocka, Lost in Space, and so… SO MANY more.

This documentary dives into Tom’s story — his passion, his routes, and the wild adventures behind them. Stay tuned as we alongside @wesrockins & @appalachian_climbing_school continue bringing this story to life!

Crowders Trail Day is back! Come help us give Charlotte’s closest climbing crag some love as we tackle general trail maintenance, trash pickup, and social-trail cut off.

Join the @carolinaclimberscoalition at 9am at the Linwood Road Access parking lot - bring water, snacks, and work gloves if you have them! Climbers are welcome to bring their gear to climb afterwards, but the CCC will NOT be leading any climbing - everyone is responsible for their own safety

Gone south for summers end.

2.5 months on the road, 5 states, who knows how many pitches of climbing. New friends, old friends, and a whole lotta fun.

One more stop along the way back to New York, then a little fall rock in the ADK before the start of something new. taken in Southeastern United States by @beyond.the.beta

Styling - North Carolina & West Virginia style. It was so cold in the first and third frames, our hands turned purple during attempts, and we all brought extremely thick blankets and layers to huddle on in between climbs. taken in Southeastern United States by @beyond.the.beta

This time last year.

A last minute boulder trip with the @innerpeaksclimbing crew up to the lake. Right as the temps started to change for the better.

Come Hell Or High Water Part 1.

A photojournalism series exploring the Linville gorge bouldering scene using nothing but an old hand drawn map of the climbing that’s deep inside the wilderness. The idea spawned from the idea that I spend so much time there on ropes, but never boulder. So I started perusing the internet to find some info on the climbs down there, and to my surprise, there was very little to none.

So I started asking some guide buddies and my contacts in the climbing world, and they didn’t know either. I found an old Reddit post from almost a decade ago of one climb, the name of it, and found the poster on instagram and asked him for some beta, and he shared some to get me started.

Eventually I found a friend who knew a guy with a map of the entire gorge and it’s bouldering. So I tracked him down and talked with him, and found out he spent 10 years wandering the gorge, putting up first ascents and hand drawing the map of all the bouldering. I got a copy, gathered a crew, and we tracked down these classic boulders and started ticking them off one by one. CHOHW is a series about adventure, exploring a classic North Carolina climbing destination with our community, honoring first ascension parties, Carolina climbing history, making memories with friends, and highlighting the work of a Carolina climbing legend.

Copies of the map are available for purchase through the link in my bio directly from the artist who drew it, if you want a cool piece of Carolina climbing history and to support a local artist. All of this work is shared with his permission as the artist, FA’er of some of the routes, and his blessing.

If you are going to explore Linville gorge bouldering, make sure you stay well within your grade limit, know where you are going, have a map, a backup plan, and a way to contact someone. These routes have loose rock, rough landings, and are hard to find. They are also miles deep into remote wilderness areas with very little service, and complicated rescue scenarios if something goes wrong. As always, use your best judgement, and have fun out there, and as always, leave no trace. Love y’all and can’t wait to share more of this project. taken in Linville Gorge Wilderness by @beyond.the.beta
