I say this because I care about you and I want you to win! 💛

You do not need to talk to your child all day to build their language.

Talking nonstop is exhausting For you and for them too, and when you’re constantly narrating, it can start to feel overwhelming instead of supportive.

Instead, I want you to try this:

🧸 1. Focus on functional words.
Pick one word for the day. Or one word for a specific activity.
Building blocks? Focus on “up.”
Snack time? Focus on “open.”
Bath time? Focus on “wash.”

🧸 2. Match your language to their current skills.
If your child has less than 50 words, model just one word.
“Open.” (while opening the box)
“Up.” (while lifting them)

If they have more than 50 words, start modeling 1–2 word phrases.
“Open box.”
“More snack.”
“Big tower.”

Short models are easier to copy and process.

🧸 3. Sing repetitive songs.
Repetition builds confidence. Familiar songs create expectancy.
Pause and let them fill in the blank:
“Twinkle, twinkle little ____!”

You don’t have to perform all day; you just have to be intentional in small moments. So take a breath, go easy on yourself, and know that you’re doing more than you think. 💛

There are lots of ways an SLP might describe a child’s communication, and the words we use can look a little different from child to child:

• Nonspeaking • Minimally speaking • Uses a few spoken words • Has limited spoken language • Communicates mostly through gestures or signs • Uses AAC to communicate

A child might also use a combination of spoken words, gestures, signs, pictures, and/or AAC, which are all meaningful ways to communicate.

There’s not one description that fits every child, and the language we use might change as their communication grows and changes.

#AD As a pediatric speech therapist, I love finding toys that bring familiar songs, repetition, and play together. The Ms. Rachel Speak & Sing Doll brings Ms. Rachel off the screen and into playtime, with so many natural opportunities to sing, imitate sounds and movements, practice familiar phrases, and encourage early communication.
