[VF🇫🇷⬇️] Did you know bilingual infants can discriminate their languages as early as 4–5 months? Between 4 and 6 months, they can even do it without any sound—just by watching a speaker’s mouth!

By age 2, they’re able to label languages as “Mom’s” and “Dad’s” (like in this video). Language labeling (“Abuela speaks Spanish. I speak Arabic. That word is Mandarin Chinese”) develops between 2–3 and consolidates between 3–5.

As a linguist, knowing these milestones has been a huge comfort as my daughter develops!

@beyondbabbles and I made the Bilingual Parenting Handbook for exactly this moment: when you have the motivation but not the roadmap.

It breaks down:
📖 The actual research on bilingual development (in a way that’s easy to understand)
🫶 What to do when your child mixes languages or refuses the target language entirely
📌 Milestones and vocabulary tracking so you know what to look for

Written by a pediatric SLP and a sociolinguist, grounded in both clinical practice and language acquisition research!

Drop a HANDBOOK and I’ll send you a link for how to get it your way 🤍

These bilingual parenting moments were TWO and a half years in the making!

Even before my daughter was born, I knew I wanted her Algerian language and culture to be a real, living part of her childhood; not just something she heard about. And that’s no small thing when you’re raising her in France, and her mama grew up in the United States! 🇩🇿🇫🇷🇺🇸

We put a family language plan in place from the very beginning. Darija isn’t the main language I’m transmitting to her, but I’ve done everything I can to nurture it through books, music, family calls, and yes, a trip that took months of planning. Visas, passport updates, logistics, and language practice.

But we made it 🤍

If you’re in that season right now; knowing it matters, but not quite having the roadmap; @beyondbabbles and I made the Bilingual Parenting Handbook for exactly this moment.
It breaks down:

📖 The actual research on bilingual development (in a way that’s easy to understand)
📋 How to build a family language plan that works in your home, not just on paper
🤝 What to do when your child mixes languages or refuses the target language entirely
📚 Expert recommendations for books, screen time, and tools across multiple languages
📌 Milestones and vocabulary tracking so you know what to look for

Written by a pediatric SLP and a sociolinguist; grounded in both clinical practice and language acquisition research, and designed to actually be read and stress-free!

I asked this question too. As a new mom, I worried— “Am I doing too much? Will this slow her down?”

But the science is clear: bilingualism doesn’t delay speech. If anything, it opens more doors. 💛

And that’s exactly why I built Birdsong.
