Inspired by Berlage's iconic Plan Zuid, Blurring Zone reimagines the ground floor as a contemporary urban landscape where architecture and the city seamlessly merge.

By connecting living, working, hospitality and leisure through a continuous public plinth, the project blurs the boundary between inside and outside, creating an inviting space for everyday encounters.

Construction starts for Sluisbuurt 1B in Amsterdam!

The project is designed as a series of mini-neighbourhoods, bringing together families, singles, and seniors in distinct clusters, each with its own character and materiality. Housing typologies respond directly to the needs of these groups: family maisonnettes are located at street level, allowing children to play outdoors with ease, while seniors reside in barrier-free apartments higher up, connected by a generous west-facing gallery that encourages social encounters.

Together these elements create a lively yet harmonious ensemble. A striking cascade of stairs leads from the ground floor to a shared roof garden, which serves as a central meeting place for all residents. In addition to 183 social housing units and 45 mid-rent apartments, the development also accommodates offices, commercial spaces, and a neighbourhood centre.

With the completion of the third seating area in Lounge 2, the series of interventions by Beyond Space at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is now finalized. Together, the three areas form a sequence of spaces that reinterpret Dutch landscape and art history within one of Europe’s busiest airports.

The first two seating areas take their starting point in the Dutch polder landscape. Located in the Haarlemmermeer, once the largest lake in the Netherlands and drained in 1852, Schiphol sits in a landscape shaped by precision and human intervention. This condition became the conceptual basis for the design, translated through the work of Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement.

Inspired by Mondrian’s later Boogie-Woogie paintings, the initial seating areas are organized as orthogonal compositions of lines and planes. Seating elements
form interconnected “rooms” of varying scales, carefully aligned with the existing architecture. Instead of primary colors, the palette is reduced to different European wood types referencing the trees Mondrian once painted. A neutral terrazzo floor binds these elements together, creating a calm and coherent environment within the intensity of the airport.

A quiet landscape within the airport. Now complete!
