Last year we had the pleasure of speaking with Genesis who came all the way to Maine from the University of California in Santa Cruz! In this clip Genesis helps us think through some questions and frameworks to reimagine how land that prisons reside on could be used, or how systems of care could be repaired to be more trusting. This speaks so incredibly to transformative justice and liberatory visioning frameworks.

Check out @beyondthebarsmaine THIS WEEK on Thursday and Friday at the University of Southern Maine to hear more conversations like this.

Learn more about healing justice at Beyond the Bars October 1st and 2nd! Jennie from @arcanamaine joined us last year to explain how we can better equip ourselves to show up in the fight for better justice systems if we regulate our nervous systems first.

We are excited to share an announcement about a new support group for justice impacted families!
Our 2026 conference partners at Uplifting Families Together- a project of VOA Northern New England - have collaborated with the Portland Recovery Community Center to begin a group to support families impacted by the carceral system. The group will alternate between peer support techniques and evidence based group therapeutic activities. There will be child specific programming as well in a nearby room. You can join us in person at the recovery center on Bishop Street or online. We begin next week! Please spread the word. taken in Portland Recovery Community Center by @beyondthebarsmaine

Why is lived experience important? How can lived expertise better inform systems to reduce cycles of recidivism and prevent harm? How can we learn new ideas from each other?

These are all questions that we got to explore at last year's Beyond the Bars. Catch more conversations like this in October!

Thank you Joel for explaining the importance of lived experience! by @beyondthebarsmaine
