• EDGE East Side Berlin | BIG | 2023

Completed in Berlin in 2023, this skyscraper designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) @big_builds stands out as a distinctive and debatable addition to the city’s skyline.

What sets it slightly apart from conventional skyscrapers is its sculptural composition. By breaking up the straight, continuous mass of a traditional glass tower into a series of stacked and shifted volumes, BIG transforms an otherwise conventional high-rise into a more dynamic architectural statement.

• A residential apartment block near the Alster in Hamburg.

Yet another beautiful example of how German architecture integrates contemporary residential design while maintaining a strong connection to its architectural traditions.The building’s respectful relationship with its surroundings and the way it sits within the urban context are particularly admirable, especially in such a significant part of Hamburg.

• Seitzhalle Sports Hall.

The building displays highly characteristic features of Hamburg’s post-war modernist architecture (Nachkriegsmoderne). Its red brick walls, white concrete structural framework, expansive glass façades, and projecting roof overhangs are particularly striking. These standardized sports halls, developed by architect Paul Seitz in Hamburg, were built starting in 1956.Characteristic features of this building type include: One of the long façades being fully glazed. Reinforced concrete columns dividing the glass façade into sections. The use of red brick on the other façades. Narrow ribbon windows providing natural light to the changing rooms and service areas. A flat-roofed reinforced concrete structure. It makes me happy to see that this charming modernist building from the 1950s has been preserved in such a central location and continues to serve its original function.

• Jasper Haus.
Walking along Mühlendamm in Hamburg, you suddenly come across this striking building. Its distinctive brick façade immediately catches your eye and sparks your curiosity.

At first, the name might make you think of Casper, the famous cartoon ghost. You can even spot Casper-inspired graffiti on nearby buildings. But despite the name, this building has nothing to do with the cartoon character.

A remarkable example of Hamburg’s modernist architecture of its time, the building stands out with its dark brick façade and is now a protected architectural landmark.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information about the architect behind it. But one thing is certain: I was absolutely fascinated by the intricate brickwork and craftsmanship of its façade.

• Residential Block – Hohenfelder Terrasse

From what I’ve been able to find, this contemporary residential block was constructed between 2015 and 2016. To me, it is a beautiful example of contemporary architecture in Hamburg. The building combines Hamburg’s traditional brick architecture with contemporary residential design. What I appreciate most here is how German architects respect their architectural heritage and continue to embrace their traditional building materials. Brick façades are an essential part of Hamburg’s architectural culture. The surrounding neighbourhood is largely characterised by brick-faced residential buildings and other structures dating from the 1950s and 1960s. In this context, the building responds respectfully to its surroundings, with a façade that blends harmoniously into the existing urban fabric while overlooking the spacious green park in front of it.

Its grey-brown fired-brick façade, recessed rooftop terrace level (which represents a transition from traditional roof forms towards a more contemporary architectural expression), large vertical windows, and recessed loggia balconies come together to create a cohesive architectural composition.

I imagine this is the kind of residential building many people in Hamburg would love to live in, both for its location and its architectural character.

• VHW Housing Cooperative – Administration Building

This office building, located just across the street from where I live, was built in the 1980s. Despite being nearly 40 years old, it is remarkably well maintained and still looks almost new.It could be described as a typical example of 1980s German architecture, particularly characteristic of Hamburg. Although its façade composition and building volumes give it a modernist appearance, the use of Hamburg’s characteristic red brick, the emphasis on local materials, and the distinctive serrated roof parapet at one end of the façade introduce elements of postmodern architecture.At the same time, the clearly expressed structural elements and the raw, solid character of the brickwork give the building a certain Brutalist quality. I used to walk past this building thinking it was just another boring German office building. Over time, however, it has become one of my favourites in the neighbourhood.

🧡 Especially in autumn, when its warm brick façade brings a sense of warmth to the street, I find myself appreciating it even more. • Walking just 100–200 metres away from Lübecker Straße feels like walking through different periods of Hamburg’s architectural history. And that is precisely one of the things that makes Hohenfelde so fascinating from an architectural history perspective.According to the City of Hamburg’s historical account of Hohenfelde, approximately 70% of the district’s original building stock was destroyed during the Second World War. In a way, the street tells the story of the city’s architectural evolution: 19th-century urbanisation, wartime destruction, post-war reconstruction, the development of transport infrastructure in the 1960s, and finally, the large-scale buildings of the late 20th century. Yet, despite all these layers of history, brick façades remain the dominant architectural feature along the street, preserving a distinctly Hamburg character.
