Before streaming, social media, and viral moments, television specials brought some of the world’s greatest entertainers directly into our living rooms.

Harry Belafonte was one of those artists whose performances were more than just music. They were celebrations of culture, rhythm, and the joy of bringing people together.

Who remembers watching television specials like this? And which legendary performer would you love to see featured next?

There’s something special about revisiting the films that expanded what Black characters could look like within genres that rarely centered us.

Blacula may have a title that gets your attention, but there’s much more beneath the surface.

Have you seen Blacula? Is it part of your spooky season watchlist?

As we enter spooky season, let’s revisit a groundbreaking piece of Black horror history.

Duane Jones didn’t just play Ben. He helped shape him. The character was originally written as a rough talking truck driver, but Jones pushed to change Ben’s dialogue and presentation, helping create the intelligent, commanding character audiences ultimately saw on screen.

This spooky season, it might be time for a rewatch.

Sometimes the difference between an idea sitting on the page and becoming a finished film is having the right resources behind it.

If you’ve been developing a short and waiting for the opportunity to bring it to life, this may be worth exploring.

Read the requirements carefully, get your materials together, and give your story a chance.

Tag an emerging filmmaker who should know about this opportunity.

There’s something special about a performer who can step into a scene and immediately make it memorable. Bebe Drake has given us humor, heart, personality, and plenty of moments that have stayed with us over the years.

Today, we’re giving her flowers and celebrating the joy she has brought to generations of audiences.

Happy Birthday, Bebe Drake!

What Bebe Drake character or moment always makes you smile?

Big dreams don’t require a Hollywood address.

Julien and Justen Turner are proof of what can happen when you start where you are, create with what you have, and keep building.

From childhood filmmakers to Sundance, their journey is a reminder that sometimes the opportunity you’re waiting for is the one you create yourself.

What are you building while you wait for the door to open? Let’s us know in the comments!

BHERC REMEMBERS SAMUEL RUFUS MCDANIEL

While his sister Hattie McDaniel became one of the most recognized names in Black film history, Samuel Rufus McDaniel built an extraordinary screen career of his own, appearing in more than 200 film and television productions.

Like many Black actors of his era, McDaniel frequently worked within the limited roles Hollywood made available to African American performers. Yet his career spanned decades as Black actors worked to establish a presence on American screens.

In 1955, he appeared on I Love Lucy as Sam the Porter in “The Great Train Robbery,” a rare named and speaking role for a Black performer on the series.

Today, BHERC remembers Samuel Rufus McDaniel and the generations of Black performers whose work helped create a path for those who followed.

Because Black film history is bigger than the names we already know.
