This photo may seem random, but the story behind it is something I won’t ever forget.

It was a sunny Saturday in June. The weekend before, on Father’s Day, we noticed my dad didn’t look well so he went to the hospital. Despite being released a few days later, we knew something serious was unfolding. We had an appointment scheduled with UCLA oncology that following Monday, already bracing for what was likely ahead.

But on this Saturday, we simply enjoyed life.

I remember my dad opening bottles of his best beer (Pliny) and best wine insisting we drink the good stuff now. We swam, BBQ’ed, laughed, and just enjoyed being together as a family.

Today marks 6 years since he passed away.

This picture hits me differently now because lately life has felt heavy. Difficult news. Friends fighting battles. People we love hurting deeply.

And as I came across this photo this morning it reminded me how quickly perspective can change. So many things I stress over today would have felt completely insignificant if I could go back to this afternoon with my dad where all we wanted to do was be together enjoying the good stuff and being present with the people who mattered most. by @bhfarwell

We created a new memory as a family just as 2025 was winding down. I grew up skiing with my family and some of our best memories were on the slopes together. This year for the first time we got our whole family up on the mountain together. ⛷️🏔️❄️ by @bhfarwell

Today marks five years without my dad.

My dad was a steady presence I could go to with anything. He didn’t always give me the answer I wanted or shield me from hard truths, but I always knew his words came from a place of unconditional love.

A lot of life has happened in five years. And the questions I wish I could ask him have only grown:
• How did you balance the hours outside of work—family, friends, faith, hobbies and the growing list of house to-do’s?
• Did the pressure to provide for your family ever stop weighing on you or did you just learn to carry it better?
• What did you do with broken relationships that didn’t heal?
• Was there ever a time you regretted spending the extra money or taking the extra day off of work?
• How did you know when to open that really nice bottle of wine or whiskey to share with someone?

I repeat this every year but I would give anything for one more evening. Just the two of us—catching up over a glass of wine or a Manhattan. Not just to ask these questions, but to sit with him, soak up his wisdom, and enjoy the gift of having a dad like him. by @bhfarwell

Hawaii 2024 didn’t disappoint.

Exploring Oahu for the first time and doing it alongside our good friends made for some unforgettable memories.

Got to celebrate our newest 4 year old this weekend while also taking advantage of our new pool with this kickoff to summer.

Caleb is such a blast to be around. Tons of adventure and fun (and sometimes too much goofiness like his dad) but with a soft spot to truly be a friend to others. I have loved seeing him grow in confidence this past year and love nothing more than him running to his room to put a hat on (because I have one on) and then jumping on the couch to sit next to me as I watch some Sunday golf.

Had to document what feels like a big milestone for our Addy Kate graduating kindergarten. 🥹 She not only grew physically and academically this year, but learned so much about what it means to be a kind and thoughtful friend and persevering when trying new or hard things. We’re so grateful for her amazing teacher that poured so much time and energy into her students, an incredible school that values community and parent involvement, and the sweetest friends that make school even more fun. Today marks 4 years since my Dad passed away and I find myself stuck in this common tension of losing him feeling like only yesterday and yet my last memories with him seem so much further away than 4 years ago.

Every time I sit with pictures of my Dad I am immediately reminded of all the things he hasn’t been a part of and I feel the ache of his absence. He never got to meet Caleb or my niece. He wasn’t able to counsel me through the most challenging time in my professional career. He won’t get to be part of the memories my family creates in our new home. And the difficult reality is knowing this list will continue to grow each year which serves as a constant reminder of him not being with us.

And yet there is this underlying sense of gratitude that somehow co-exists alongside my grief. Gratefulness for the memories I do have, for the things he taught me, for the time he spent with me as my Dad. I believe that’s God’s grace over me because of the hope I have rooted in my faith and in knowing my Dad is completely healed. So each year I walk into this day holding both grief and gratitude and trying to honor his memory and his legacy.
