Meet 2/4 of our amazing Taste for Equity Alumni chefs behind the menu, Chef Deepak @bhunarestaurant of Bhuna!

Chef Deepak Kaul's path to Bhuna began after college, when medical school didn't feel like the right fit and encouragement from his girlfriend led him toward cooking. Today, he draws on his family's roots in Kashmir to introduce Portland diners to a different side of Indian food. "I want to expose people to things that are not what they're used to," he says. That personal perspective extends beyond the plate: Bhuna's soundtrack includes the pop, hip-hop, R&B, and jazz he grew up with in the States. "My restaurant space is me," he says—a reflection of both his heritage and the life he's lived.

On November 6, Taste for Equity presents Flourish: a five-senses adventure inspired by the vibrant energy of an urban Asian American night market.

PORTLAND FRIED CHICKEN WEEK!! I’ve loved this @bhunarestaurant chicken sandwich for YEARSSSSSSS and it’s only $10 this week. Go rough it up and then return again and again for this wildly delicious Indian food. like I always say: support the good ones, THESE are the good ones!!! And huge shout out to @theactualportland for coordinating Fried Chicken Week. GO GO GO!!

Best Indian Food in PDX 🔥

It truly is an amazing experience each time I come here. Similar to how Kann crafts upscale Haitian dishes or Langbaan’s exquisite take on Thai food - @bhunarestaurant is skillfully asking Portlanders to put some respect on the Indian food game here in PDX. These dishes are crafted with a level of love and expertise that few restaurants in the city can boast.

With all that being said, Bhuna is actually very approachable. The prices are not as expensive as the two fore-mentioned spots. No swanky outfits necessary as it’s a more casual laid-back vibe and it’s surprisingly kid friendly.

Despite his insane culinary skills, Chef Deepak Kaul is down to earth and very funny. The kind of guy you’d want to grab a beer with (or two) 🍻

Lastly, I should probably mention that they have a pretty solid happy hour 4-6pm daily (open Wed-Sun) with a quality bar program and these little sliders that are freakin awesome.

Join me in part 2 of this series where I take a behind the scenes look at Bhuna Indian Restaurant in NW Portland.
Chef Deepak Kaul takes me into the kitchen where I got to see him prepare the lamb for his signature Kashmiri Lamb Rogan Josh. Kashmiri cooking tells on spices instead of filler flavors like garlic and onion to deliver a flavor punch in every bite.

Today, we're shining our District 4 spotlight on Bhuna @bhunarestaurant

Bhuna brings hearty Kashmir dishes Chef and owner, Deepak Kaul, grew up with. Deepak started his culinary career in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From there, he worked in San Francisco, New York City, and London before settling in the Pacific Northwest. He started Bhuna as a pop-up and moved into a brick-and-mortar location on NW 21st Avenue shortly after.
