Meet 2/4 of our amazing Taste for Equity Alumni chefs behind the menu, Chef Deepak @bhunarestaurant of Bhuna!

Chef Deepak Kaul's path to Bhuna began after college, when medical school didn't feel like the right fit and encouragement from his girlfriend led him toward cooking. Today, he draws on his family's roots in Kashmir to introduce Portland diners to a different side of Indian food. "I want to expose people to things that are not what they're used to," he says. That personal perspective extends beyond the plate: Bhuna's soundtrack includes the pop, hip-hop, R&B, and jazz he grew up with in the States. "My restaurant space is me," he says—a reflection of both his heritage and the life he's lived.

On November 6, Taste for Equity presents Flourish: a five-senses adventure inspired by the vibrant energy of an urban Asian American night market.

Winner, Winner — Chicken Dinner
If you’re visiting Portland and wondering where to find really good chicken, start here. No rankings, no shade — just what I’m loving right now:

1. Lua Vietnamese Restaurant (N Williams) - @luapdx
Fish sauce wings + chicken pho broth + pandan bubble waffle = comfort food perfection.
2. Bhuna (NW 21st) - @bhunarestaurant
A boldly spiced, messy-in-the-best-way chicken sandwich with fries, chili salt, and mango ketchup.
3. OK Chicken & Khao Soi (SE Division) - @okchickenandkhaosoi
Northern Thai khao soi with a tender chicken leg in a rich coconut curry broth. Worth the hype.
4. LoRelle’s Chicken Shack (Lloyd Center Mall) - @lorellschickenshack
Chicago-style wings, hot honey, fresh-cut fries. Mall food court defenders, this one’s for you.
5. Arrosto (NE Sandy Blvd.) - @arrostopdx
Classic fire-roasted chicken dinner — best paired with a chilled sparkling wine.
6. LaVerne’s (N. Dekum) - @lavernespdx
Rotisserie chicken, standout cocktails, and chicken nachos I don’t like sharing.

Save this list and tell me — wings, sandwich, or rotisserie?

🍛 February 2026 Food Highlights 🍛

This month flew by with the New Year celebration, birthdays, and settling into a new job. The unsettling dry winter has been good for my spirits, but I worry about drought in the summer to come. Otherwise, I have been biding my energy to prepare for spring in hopes of growth, change, and renewal.

Keep thriving and take care of each other. 💚
