NOW Festival by @calartsredcat is an innovative residency program where artists come together to explore, experiment, and bring new artistic visions to life.

I’m thrilled to be developing MARILYN TIMES, based on the original play by Brazilian playwright @sroveri, directed by @chica_barbosa, with creative collaborations by @thiagozanato, @brunaimai, and @not_eduardomuniz.

Blurring the boundaries between theatre, cinema, and performance, MARILYN TIMES @marilyntimes_theplay explores the women behind the icon — Marilyn Monroe and Norma Jeane — revealing the struggles, contradictions, and complexities of being a woman behind a mask.

Marilyn Times revisits the legend of Marilyn Monroe through a Latin American lens to question what might be possible when an icon is liberated. The performance stages a dream-state encounter between three characters: Norma Jeane (the woman), Marilyn Monroe (the myth), and Bia Borinn (the performer). Inspired by Brazilian playwright Sergio Roveri’s play imagining Monroe’s final moments, director and filmmaker Chica Barbosa expands that text in a multidimensional piece layering film projection and solo performance. Created in Marilyn Monroe’s centenary year, Marilyn Times frames Monroe’s life as a site of rupture exceeding the illusions of Hollywood projected onto her.

I saw @adrian_lester in Brazil 20+ years ago playing Hamlet with @les_bouffes_du_nord directed by #peterbrook ❤️ I was amazed. Last week I got the chance to see him again in @cyranowestend and he confirmed that his mastery comes from his talent and the craft itself, the repetition, full joy and the courage to take risks. Le jeu. Seeing this show after a 12 years gap gives me hope and energy and excitement to play again. I got really emotional. At the end of the day, we come to the old question: to be or not to be. What an actor. What a play. What a cast. And the adaptation & vision… wow, congrats @debrisstevenson #simonevans @thersc taken in Noël Coward Theatre by @biaborinn

Sir Alan Ayckbourn. This is his 92nd play. It’s been 15 years since we arrived in Scarborough for the first time, and our admiration, gratitude and love for him and his family just got stronger and deeper. Just like his last play, “The Trial of Romeo Oscar”, that we had the privilege to see the previews. A play that is dense (his first “trial play”, I’ve never seen so many words and monologues), fun and poetic. It’s a love letter to art, language and technology. In my view, Alan finds light in the darkness. A place of human reconciliation where art is like that small flower that grows between the walls. Against all odds. His play is almost a guide, to me. What to do, what to avoid, what to perceive. I know it’s not his intention, though. The actors are brilliant and the seagulls in Scarborough are going strong… Just like my love for my love, and our love for theatre. Our lives and loved ones are intertwined with our craft. And I feel happy. Even in tough times, art gives us beauty and hope. Hope! Without the Sun and the Rain, apparently opposite forces, there’s no Rainbow.
