With all the barbaric news, recent and not so recent, I keep returning to summer’s memories. They brought hope and joy, and inspiration from those who navigated uncertainty and violence with dreams, poetry, and delirium. Clarice, Betye Saar, María Berrío, Nancy Joyce Peters, Arghavan Khosravi, Marilyn and of course, Carrington. Thank you to our surrealist muse @amandamacielantunes and the counterpoint found at @surrealist_study_group for diving into these women.

Through these memories (lots other missing with dear people), I celebrate the ones they call mad, the misfits, non-categorized who guide us to endure this cruel world. Not the narcissists shits who thrive in power behind putrefied masks. Fuck them. They might think they’ve won with their dirty tricks, but I still hope they’ll lose beautifully when the tide turns.

So I won’t let them take away the warmth, the wonder, the hedonism among friends and comrades. And I sing along to Mercedes Sosa on this heat wave Wednesday morning:

Celebrating Life. 🥂

Marilyn Times revisits the legend of Marilyn Monroe through a Latin American lens to question what might be possible when an icon is liberated. The performance stages a dream-state encounter between three characters: Norma Jeane (the woman), Marilyn Monroe (the myth), and Bia Borinn (the performer). Inspired by Brazilian playwright Sergio Roveri’s play imagining Monroe’s final moments, director and filmmaker Chica Barbosa expands that text in a multidimensional piece layering film projection and solo performance. Created in Marilyn Monroe’s centenary year, Marilyn Times frames Monroe’s life as a site of rupture exceeding the illusions of Hollywood projected onto her.

📅 Nov 19, 20 & 21

Did you know? 🇧🇷✨
In 1941, Carmen Miranda became the first Latin American artist to leave her handprints and footprints at the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

A Brazilian icon who brought samba, music, and Brazilian culture to American stages, Carmen built a legacy that still lives on in Los Angeles today.

This Latino Heritage Month, we’re celebrating her story — Brazilian style. 🇧🇷

Join us on September 20 for Carmen Miranda Nights, featuring Brazilian actress Bia Borinn bringing a taste of Carmen Miranda: The Queen of Samba to Casa Ipanema.

From Carmen making her mark in Hollywood in the 1940s to Bia continuing that Brazilian presence in Los Angeles today — it’s a celebration of culture, music, and the legacy of a true Brazilian icon.

Come celebrate Carmen Miranda with us. ✨
