Robert Biale Vineyards began with a 14-year-old, Aldo Biale. His parents immigrated from Italy, like many who helped shape Napa Valley, and found their way into farming and eventually the wine industry. What started as a secret jug of Zinfandel became a family legacy rooted in tradition, community, and a commitment to preserving California’s heritage varietals and Napa as it was.

Zinfandel in the middle of Cabernet country. The Morisoli family has been at it for 116 years.

Thank you, Tim Fish (@timefish_wine) and @‌wine_spectator, for telling the story of a family we are proud to call friends. Five generations of Morisolis have farmed the same Rutherford ground off Niebaum Lane, holding on to Zinfandel in a neighborhood where Cabernet pays a whole lot more.

Our winemaker David Natali has made our Morisoli Vineyard Zinfandel since 2020, and he still counts us lucky to get the fruit. As he told Tim, the family could easily put Zin second, but “they farm everything with the belief that it’s their name on the bottle.”

You can taste that in the glass.

Overcast days and marine fog at Robert Biale Vineyards in the Oak Knoll region of Napa help the Zinfandel grapes slow down sugar accumulation and develop rich flavor and brightness. I have to say this was our favorite stop in Napa and I have to say their foggy morning Petite Sirah was my favorite wine of the trip :) Scroll for more ! by @bialevineyards

Gaudi Carli planted this vineyard just outside Calistoga in 1920. More than 100 years later, it's Napa's oldest Barbera vineyard, and it's still in the family. His daughter, the late Marie Torrigino, carried it forward, and today her son Steve, daughter-in-law Joyce, and Gaudi's great-grandson Joe Vanni are the stewards of the land. That's Napa as it was.

Before Napa Valley was a tourist destination, it was built on farmers leaning on farmers. That's the Napa Bob Biale and Rich Salvestrin grew up in, as neighbors and friends who always had each other's backs. Earlier this year, Rich sat down with Bob for our Napa As It Was film series to remember those days.
