On Photography by Susan Sontag

This originally was not on my book list. I added it last minute, as I was going through my bookcase I pulled it out and it stuck with me. I have an interest in religion and history but I also majored in Photography, have a consistent photo practice, and work in the arts currently. Sometimes it is so engrained in my everyday that I forget it as something I choose to engage with, to learn about, and continue to do. Which is why I’ve chosen On Photography by Susan Sontag. We interact with photo and video now more than ever, and photos are almost never, quite the truth. This is a hard psychological fallacy to shake. To be critical of what we view, and how we view is paramount. Sontag’s book has gone from just being a seminal text of photographers to being something I would recommend to everyone. Particularly Sontag’s thoughts on the relationship of photography and voyeurism as it pertains to social media and our new use of the medium.

Batavia’s Graveyard by Mike Dash

Excuse the condition of this book, my cat decided to destroy the cover as she seems to have a vendetta against all books. This is my historical nonfiction pick. Is it scholarly yes? Is it absolutely insane? Also yes. I have two reasons for picking this book, the first being that I have many people who tell me they don’t like historical nonfiction and this is 1 of the 3 books I suggest to change their mind. This book is about the maiden trip of the Batavia, which suffers a shipwreck which is unfortunately not the worst of the incidents to befall the crew. While shipwrecked, a power vacuum within the crew allows for an extreme heretic to mutinize, and terrorize. Which brings me to the second reason I chose this book, that it is also an intense study of the human psyche and how we create, justify, and manipulate through religion and hierarchy. Historically, cults happen, and quite often. The line between organized religion and a cult can blur, quickly, which is what this book explores. (Trigger warning: violence, mentions of SA.)

Baruch Spinoza: Ethics

This one is going to be hard to condense - how can you for a man who completely tried to overthrow the church-mandated concept of God? Spinoza famously states that God is nature and nature is God. A claim that quickly got him labeled as an atheist and heretic. Spinoza’s ontological arguments are the reason this one goes on the list and an important cornerstone of any religious studies student. Not to mention it got its first English translation by George Eliot for extra cool points.

Paradise Lost by John Milton

Are you a Dante girlie or a Milton girlie? There’s plenty of reasons to read Paradise Lost, from sympathy for the devil, thinly veiled anti-monarchy sentiments, or just for the fact that Milton invented the capital of Hell, Pandemonium. Read it for the deeper meanings or just the goth vibes. Either is fine.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

I couldn’t speak about books that I love without talking about Frankenstein. I am obsessed with Mary Shelley. I’m obsessed with Mary Wollstonecraft. I am obsessed with William Godwin. Percy Shelley would wish that I am obsessed with him but I am definitely not. At the epicenter of all these relationships you have one of the first sci-fi novels, Frankenstein. You can read it as a creation story, a horror story, or you can read it as a new mother, there are so many interpretations and rewards, hence all the sticky notes in my copy to easily flip through to a few good margin annotations. This book will also send you on so many Wikipedia deep-dives, and who doesn’t love that? by @bibliofeed

God by Reza Aslan

I could recommend all of Reza Aslan’s books but I think this is the best to start with. The title holds no secrets here, the book is about the history of God. Moving through how humans have constructed the concept over the years, and settling into the God most of us are familiar with in some way. If you have ever been interested in religion from an academic perspective tho is a great place to start!

Caliban and the Witch by Sylvia Federici

I read this awhile back on a train to Philly and finished it before the train got to its destination. This book focuses on the European witch trials starting in the 1450s and lasting into the 17th century. This book delves further than the witch trials than being just gory spectacle and religious fervor but views it through a Feminist and Marxist lens. This book is one of my favorites as a capsule study of power structures that still affect us today, while having such a unique and fresh perspective on a historical topic that already has prolific discourse.

Week 218: Hey Y’all! My name is Seychelle (Say-shell) and I’m so happy to share with you some of my favorite books. I read all kinds of books but I am a big nonfiction reader who usually is spending time picking out books about subjects that fascinate me. I am a big time history person with an interest in religion from an academic perspective, focusing mainly on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I hope to continue my education in it one day but for now being an autodidact will have to do. I hope you enjoy my picks and thanks for having me Bibliofeed!

Drowning by T.J. Newman is one of my most recent reads, and I absolutely loved this book. It’s action-packed from the very first sentence and played out like a movie in my head. I swear, I almost checked my blood pressure a few times while I was reading this book. But there isn’t just action; there’s so much humor and heart, too. I gasped, I laughed, and I cried. I can tell this will be one that’ll stick with me forever. by @bibliofeed

The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent is one of my favorite romantasy books of all time. I binged this in about 2 days and then immediately picked up the sequel. To me, this has the perfect balance of romance and fantasy. Vampires, dark magic, survival, romance, action: I ate it up! Oraya, the main female character, is one of my favorite written characters of all time. by @bibliofeed

I read Recursion by Blake Crouch last year, and it’s one of those books that has stuck with me ever since. I loved the main characters and dual timeline, and it had me guessing the entire time. I couldn’t put it down. There are times to this day that I found myself thinking about parts of this book. by @bibliofeed

Next up is A Love Letter to Whiskey by Kandi Steiner. Not only is this probably my favorite romance, but it’s one of my favorite books of all time. This book made me fall head-over-heels in love with the romance genre. It’s extremely angsty and took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. But honestly, I love an angsty romance that makes me want to throw the book across the room (but then pick it back up and whisper “I’m so sorry”). This is that book. by @bibliofeed
