POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I finally finished John Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat and what a delight! I took my time with this wee book. It wasn’t a demanding read. But I was treating each chapter like a series episode and dragged it on for as long as I could. The story follows a group of friends - jobless, irresponsible, and constantly inebriated. Danny is a central character yet for most part of the book his involvement is modest. Often the chapters talk about each friend and their outrageous involvement in a fight, drinking - order interchangeable - or crimes “altruistically committed” (like stealing a sack of potatoes to give to a starving family).

This is apparently Steinbeck’s first book which became a commercial success. It’s got the absurdity and the graphic details of a Guy Ritchie film (I’m sorry to Steinbeck ? for this comparison). It is humorous with an unpredictable ending. So think of the dark comedy films like Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg and The Banshees of Inisherin (a favourite!) by Martin McDonagh.

In the end, life became a bit ‘dull’ for Danny

“What is it Danny? What makes you feel this way? Danny didn’t know...there was vague sorrow in him like despair of autumn”

“Do you fear the fate is closing in on you? Are there no pleasures left?”

————-
There’s one concept perfectly captured here that’s foreign to most now, and it’s the mundane and slow type of living. At last, to Danny, this type of living became pitiful, insufficient even.

“Danny began to feel the beating of time. He looked at his friends, and saw how with them every day was the same.”

While I would like to feel and experience extraordinary things in life, I wouldn’t mind living slowly in this other world that fits on my palm and scowls at me with every swipe.

I had forgotten how good it feels to read a book purely to enjoy good stories by great storytellers!

Hope everyone gets the weekend they deserve!🍷

Ah, the /dark/ classics I would read again now that I’m older. Not wiser though. I was too young then to appreciate the depth of these books so they’re now on my ‘next list.’ I think I’ll start with Trainspotting, follow it up with the film - which I haven’t seen!

When I say I love The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, I mean so much that it will never leave my Favourite List.

What a book. Satirical, witty, and political. This is about the afterlife, but it’s also about life amidst a country in conflict with itself.

If Elif Shafak’s 10 Minutes and 38 Seconds in this Strange World is your cup of tea, then this book is for you. There is symmetry there. And if you enjoy the surrealism of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, then you’ll love this too!

I was strongly rooting for this when it got nominated for Booker Prize. On the night of the announcement, I was in Portugal streaming on my phone…Of course, it won!

I had just finished reading Autocracy, Inc - a non-fiction so my next book should’ve been a light fiction read. Yet I broke my reading protocol when I started this book. And I’m glad I did this diversion.

Autocracy, Inc. and Vulture Capitalism are, as I find them, somehow complementary and would benefit from a back-to-back reading. I only wish I read Vulture Capitalism first before Autocracy, Inc. This book is fraught with appalling stories (Boeing planes, COVID, blocking of Suez Canal, Energy Companies 😡, and many more).

The conclusion however is a bit thin, underwhelming? After all that build-up, I was hoping it to be (even more) polemic against capitalism? It doesn’t matter what I think, it’s a book still packed with lessons and arguments on economic systems (and many controversies!) besides, I was on my way home from work when I got to the end..perhaps the (brain) shutters were about to close and that may have dampen the punch of its ending - I think i’ll have to read that part again soon.

Anyway, If you ever see this book, get it. Read it fast or read it slow, either way, read it…be prepared to get angry, but more importantly, empowered!

Today is a good day to read.

SPOILER: Today is always a good day to read.

Currently Reading: THE FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP - Grady Hendrix (Titan)

I'm finally reading this, and I confess - i'm enjoying the horror film easter eggs as much as I am the story, though i'm only a fifth of the way in so i'm hoping that will change. (Identifying the final girls to their films and their naming links has been disappointingly easy. Maybe i'm showing my age!)

Anyway, it's good to have book I can sink my teeth into. Love those meta reads!

Been hitting the books!

I devoured Caitlin Devlin's THE REAL DEAL (Lake Union Publishing) - a book about a reality tv series from the late 2000s that ended in a cloud of scandal, that has a reunion 10 years later forcing the child stars to reckon with what happened on and off screen, and define reality once and for all. (If you have ever been a Dance Moms/The Hills/Spice Girls fan you'll love this.)

Right now I'm reading one of my favourite crime writers - Sarah Bailey from Australia who has released a stand alone novel called THE HOUSEMATE. (Allen & Unwin) . As always, it features a complicated not always likeable female lead character - this time a crime reporter - struggling to keep her job in an industry where strong investigative reporting is becoming undervalued, under resourced and worryingly, hard to find.
When an old case has a HIGE development 10 years on, Oli is thrown into the spotlight dragging some digital wunderkind behind her, very aware that this is the case her husbands ex wife was working on when she was murdered. LOVE IT! Sarah Bailey is great - if you like Tana French (who is not Itish but who *is* great) or Jane Harper you'll like her.
And if you're a journo like me you'll read this and groan out loud a lot. I warn you 🤣

Book in bed. Perfection.

Current Read: THE GIRLS OF SUMMER - Katie Bishop (Transworld)

There's.ord than a whiff of Epstein to this story of a British woman who fell in love for the first time when she was 17 - with a man 20 years her senior. That steamy secret summer romance went on to shape and define her life for the next 20years. He was her great love - everything else a pale imitation.
Except close to 40, she's forced to reexamine that summer through far wiser more worldly eyes, and what she sees is a lot uglier and more painful than she ever really realised.

Confronting, but relevant. I recognise a lot of the situations in this book. More than I like, if i'm honest. I also recognise a lot of the red flags that a sheltered 17yo misses - but hindsight is the gift that keeps on giving, right?!

I'm not finished yet - taking my time. Some of it is uncomfortably close to the bone, and I suspect a lot of women my age will find the same thing.

the flu has infiltrated our home during the final throes of winter break. (this is an apt title, but I love a trippy read and so far this one is hallucinatory/fever-dreamy in the most non-gruesome way.)
