Should regular eyesight checks be mandatory for Queensland drivers?

Right now, Queensland largely relies on drivers to voluntarily report changes to their vision, rather than requiring regular eyesight assessments for all licence holders.

Carol's Law aims to change that.

Named in memory of Carol Ismail, who was killed while riding in 2020 by a driver who had repeatedly been told his eyesight was too poor to drive. His eyesight was too poor to even call 000 once he stopped. The proposed law would introduce mandatory vision checks at key milestones.

For people walking and riding bikes, being seen by drivers is critical to their safety.

Add your name to the Queensland Parliamentary e-petition calling for Carol's Law - the link is available via the news section of our website.

Did you ride to work on Ride2Work Day yesterday?

Or do you often replace short trips by bike?

We calculated that the average Queensland household may be able to pay off the average Queensland mortgage if they use bikes enough to become a one car household (bearing in mind that the average Queensland household has two cars).

And those average Queensland households could save well over $10,000 a year from their average Queensland mortgage, just by riding enough to only own one car.

Maybe that is why everyone at our Ride2Work Day morning was smiling?

But it might have been the coffees BQ paid for.

We've got more details on how riding a bike adds up to substantial savings on our website - link in profile.

Bicycle Queensland celebrated National Ride2Work Day today as we welcomed riders, members and community partners to the northern end of Brisbane’s City Botanic Gardens for a morning of coffee, conversation and cycling advocacy.

“It was a great event! We had over 120 riders visit, despite the threat of rain. Thanks to all the riders who came along and had a coffee on us. So many smiles. The bike community is awesome,” said BQ CEO Dr Matthew Burke.

Bicycle Queensland thanks Brisbane City Council, CycleLaw, Project 529, Mulga Bills cafe and everyone who stopped by to help celebrate National Ride2Work Day.

More details are on our website.

There’s nothing like free coffee to get you on a ride.

Big thanks to @bicycle_qld for shouting over 200 coffees on national Ride to Work day today to grateful cyclists.
It was great to meet all the commuters and enthusiastic riders and chat all things bikes and coffee 🚲 ☕️ .

Bicycle Queensland are now Snacket stockists, you can grab one any time in their shop or at BQ organized events.

Shout out to @mulga.bills for making a delicious lactose free latte with extra special latte art. 🫶 ☕️ 🚴🏽

The Queensland Government has released the rules for its new EPAC Assurance Scheme, expected to commence on 2 November 2026.

The scheme provides a pathway for eligible e-bikes to be verified as compliant, but it could cost riders up to $70.

$0 – Initial pre-screening
$50 – Formal assessment
$20 – Compliance label and verification record

If you are already riding an EN15194-compliant e-bike with the required compliance label, you don't need to have it verified again.

Bicycle Queensland believes riders shouldn't be footing the bill for inspections and stickers required because of government legislative changes. BQ will continue to push for the Queensland and/or Commonwealth Governments to cover these costs.

The scheme is expected to commence on 2 November, with a list of Authorised Verifiers to be published by the Queensland Government.

More details are on our website.
