👏🏆 Shoutout to our very own Elena Ahrens, PGY-1 and Loring Scholar, on receiving the John D. Michenfelder New Investigator Award at the SNACC Annual Meeting!

On this stormy, rainy weekend, our CA-1s shined bright at the NEAR Conference! Thi Nguyen and Matthew Sparling gave great presentations about challenging cases, while Emily Eachus gracefully co-chaired the conference. 💫 💫💫

We were very proud and excited to represent BIDMC while connecting with residents from across New England. Thank you to everyone who joined, including our PD Dr. Aidan Sharkey who participated in the Residency Program Director Panel Discussion. 🙏

We’ve been busy strengthening international connections, gaining new perspectives, and learning from leaders across the field of anesthesiology! ️

This week, we welcomed two guest attendings from London to lead interactive teaching sessions and present at our weekly Grand Rounds, focusing on difficult airway management:

✨ Dr. George Christodoulides and Dr. Jessica Johnston, Consultant Anesthetists at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

From case-based discussions to hands-on learning in one-lung ventilation, we had the opportunity to engage with internationally recognized experts and exchange ideas on adapting airway management strategies for complex and challenging cases.

We’re grateful to Drs. Christodoulides and Johnston for sharing their expertise with us. We look forward to applying what we learned in our clinical practice! by @bidmc_anesthesia

Giving feedback isn’t always easy, especially in challenging situations. Fortunately, we get to practice these conversations in a supportive environment with expert guidance from our anesthesia faculty.

During this week’s “Improving Feedback in Challenging Situations” workshop, we rotated through five interactive stations focused on:

🔹 Communicating with trainees while caring for awake patients throughout the perioperative experience

🔹 Addressing unprofessional behavior with clarity and professionalism

🔹 Navigating situations where someone may be resistant to feedback or difficult to communicate with

🔹 Improving the structure and effectiveness of written feedback

🔹 Making the most of BIDMC’s feedback tools and evaluation systems

Through hands-on practice and constructive conversations like these, we develop the skills we use every day to foster stronger teams, support continuous learning, and deliver exceptional patient care.

Yesterday’s Grand Rounds with Dr. Adam Rodman challenged a common narrative around AI in healthcare. 💻

One of the most surprising takeaways was that AI in medicine is not a new idea. Clinicians and researchers have been exploring ways to use machines to support diagnosis and decision-making for decades.

What stood out most was Dr. Rodman’s invitation to think differently about the future: how clinicians, patients, and AI systems might work together to deliver better care.

As AI becomes more capable, qualities like trust, communication, and clinical judgment become even more important.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn, reflect, and think critically about where healthcare is headed!

What does the future of anesthesiology research look like? We got a glimpse of it at the annual Loring Scholar Grand Rounds!

This year’s session featured presentations from four current Loring Scholars, showcasing projects that span machine learning, health disparities in critical care, pediatric cancer therapeutics, and perioperative brain health.

There was also a warm welcome for the newest scholars, Drs. Elena Ahrens and Summit Singhaviranon. 💡

We’re lucky to learn from such a brilliant group of researchers! The breadth of their work is truly inspiring.
