“Tim and Kev head to London’s Hampstead to visit Patty Hopkins, one of Britain’s most influential
architects and the co-founder of Hopkins Architects, the practice she started with her late husband
Michael in 1976.
For this very special interview she opens the doors to the iconic glass and steel home the pair designed for themselves that same year. It remains one of the most compelling residential examples of High-Tech architecture, a style that celebrates technology by exposing structural elements like steel frames, ducts and services as part of the design.
In 1994 Patty became only the third woman to receive the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture from the
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and in this intimate conversation she shares the story of her
radical house, the practice she built with Michael, and the quiet wisdom that comes from a life in
architecture.” by @big_design_adventure

That’s an announcement.

Two mates, Tim Ross - comedian, broadcaster, and self-described design nerd - and Kevin McCloud — pundit, writer and celebrated host of Grand Designs — have teamed up for a new podcast: Tim and Kev’s Big Design Adventure.

In this audio escapade, the architectural enthusiasts embark on a rollicking (and occasionally shambolic) journey, sharing their love of design by visiting buildings that inspire them, meeting the people who create or inhabit them, and diving deep into the places that shape and spark their imaginations.

Heartbreaking images. The 1960s Halifax Swimming Pool in Yorkshire is currently being demolished by the council. Designed by F. H. Hoyles with ceramic murals by Kenneth Barden, this building was deemed too difficult to restore.

Can you imagine living in a museum?

Tim and Kev head to Surrey to visit The Homewood, the modernist masterpiece Patrick Gwynne designed for his family in the late 1930s.

Completed in 1938, The Homewood is one of the most remarkable examples of pre-war modernist architecture in Britain.

Gwynne later gifted the house to the National Trust in 1999, with the stipulation that someone must live in it and that it be opened to the public for part of the year.

That person is Lou, whose family has called it home since 2004, while welcoming visitors inside this extraordinary piece of living history.

I bet you’ve got questions already. We certainly did — and we’ve probably asked most of them in this fascinating interview, recorded around Gwynne’s own custom-made round dining table.

“Tim and Kevin head to West London to borrow the keys to an apartment in Trellick Tower, the iconic Brutalist apartment block designed by Hungarian émigré architect Ernő Goldfinger — an absolute banger of an example of social housing.

Joining them on the sofa is Ernő’s granddaughter, Pippa, who shares her very personal story of growing up around her incredibly progressive grandparents, particularly at 2 Willow Road, Ernő’s groundbreaking modernist development that became a very modern multigenerational home and is now a much-loved National Trust house museum.

Pippa, who also leads a creative life as Head of Design at Design West, paints the most wonderful picture of the incredible life her grandfather led as we explore his significant legacy.”

“Tim Ross and Kevin McCloud pull on their hard hats for a tour of 66 Portland Place, the striking 1934 London home of the Royal Institute of British Architects. @riba

Chair of the RIBA Board of Trustees Jack Pringle guides them through the building as it’s being stripped back, restored and reimagined as a new, more welcoming public home for architecture.

Along the way, they uncover the work of designer Miriam Wornum, whose colourful original interiors have been hidden or lost over the decades and Jack also reveals plans for a new home for the incredible RIBA archive.”
