POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
That’s an announcement.

Two mates, Tim Ross - comedian, broadcaster, and self-described design nerd - and Kevin McCloud — pundit, writer and celebrated host of Grand Designs — have teamed up for a new podcast: Tim and Kev’s Big Design Adventure.

In this audio escapade, the architectural enthusiasts embark on a rollicking (and occasionally shambolic) journey, sharing their love of design by visiting buildings that inspire them, meeting the people who create or inhabit them, and diving deep into the places that shape and spark their imaginations.

Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.

Electrifying 80s

Crigan House by Allan Powell, St.Kilda, 1988-89.

Good photos at the start are @shannonmcgrath7

I love this house. Picked up the Victorian enduring architecture award a few years ago. I thought it was an inspired choice.
It’s aged better than the thought of having half a dozen Illusion Shakers.

I booked the Civic Hall in Campbelltown based on a shit website photo of what looked like a good building.

Yesterday I was against the clock to make the 57km journey from Sydney to get there by 4pm to collect the keys. Makes total sense that council offices close at 4pm in the modern world, I reckon.

It was a bit of a blur when I arrived at 3.59pm, but I got the swipe card and then noticed the buildings.

They boast quite the assortment of very good civic buildings, including the main council building, the hall and the old library building, all designed by Davey, Brindley and Vickery (1964–1971).

Then, in 1982, Grenfell, Fraser and Associates offered up the rather nice Brutalist extension to the original building.

The council went hard with the first council building on the promise of Campbelltown becoming a much larger satellite city.

Those plans were abandoned.

I had a wonderful time presenting to a super-engaged audience.

The hall was cool. Great civic buildings rock. taken in Campbelltown Civic Hall by @modernister

The Sydney home of architect Michael Dysart.

A beautifully renovated railway cottage overlooking parkland.

A few iPhone snaps while filming with Michael in 2020.

“The chairs are beautiful but most of them are uncomfortable!” he said with a grin. by @modernister

This 1957 house in Hobart was given quite the cuddle by @bekandhame

Old bones connected to the new bones.

More of this to save us from the bling-riddled duplex hellhole we are walking into.

This house will be part of @oh_hobart if you want to visit.

Welcome to Villa Negroni. If you are on your third marriage, wear tracksuits semi formally and love daytime bag, this might just be the pad for you.

Designed by Armand Negroni in the early 70s, this house outside of Paris is currently for sale (€950,000)

Thanks to @emilyforgot for the tip. by @modernister

Are we giving architecture of the 1980s the love it deserves?

This is the former AFTRS building at Macquarie University designed by Daryl Jackson and Robin Dyke in the late 1980s.

When I was taking these photos a member of staff suggested the building needed a bulldozer!

I love it. by @modernister

Heartbreaking images. The 1960s Halifax Swimming Pool in Yorkshire is currently being demolished by the council. Designed by F. H. Hoyles with ceramic murals by Kenneth Barden, this building was deemed too difficult to restore.
