“Ngumarri is a place along Lawn Hill Creek on the traditional lands of the Waanyi people. The song is inspired by stories from my grandfather’s sisters, my Garngu in our language, who grew up living on Country before being taken to Gregory Downs as teenagers. They didn’t speak English then and slowly learnt it by listening to the children around the police station. “Ngumarri” reflects their memories of life on Waanyi Country, when the land was full of running fresh water and their days were spent fishing, hunting, and living closely with the land.”
-Elijah Douglas
