POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Next week is the National Safe Routes to School Conference in Minneapolis and I can't wait to see my partners in crime in my favorite biking city in America.

I will be sharing Quickbuild success stories from @hoodriverwalkandroll. We are a rural community with little to no resources and these projects have quickly opened access to children and youth, as well as adults.

Who is coming!?

Happy 17th birthday to my mini-me, Annika.

Giving birth to her on Saturday, September 19, 2009 around 4pm on a beautiful afternoon in Cambridge, changed Megan's life trajectory, forever an advocate for childhood mobility.

She would wear baby Annika while voicing support for bike lanes in testimony at public meetings in Boston and Cambridge.

Last Sunday Parkways!

Our family had an awesome time leading the Slug 🐛 🚲 Bike Bus to and from the east side.

Thanks to @clevercycles for the rear flat fox in a pinch!

A car-free day trip from Boston by train 🚆 and bike🚲

🗺️ 🔗

Take a day trip to the epicenter of both the American Revolution and one of the first major American literary and philosophical movements. Oh, and did we mention there's swimming and ice cream? The ride is 24 miles round trip (with outbound train ride) or 38 miles round trip (few hills outbound), so plan for a picnic!

Founder's Note - This is one of our favorite rides to do on a Summer or Fall weekend. You'll get nature, art, history, food, first class bike trails and picture perfect scenery.

We were lucky to do this with the ride curator, @jsscarobertson and her beau, Galen, when we were in town....oh, the memories!

MONDAY AUG 17, 5PM
By Kyle Ramey

Our family was biking north up Mass Ave, alongside the Christian Science Publishing Academy at 210 Massachusetts Ave. An ambulance was parked in the unprotected bike lane, with no lights or engine running. We signaled with our left hands and biked into the car lane to go around, and Megan was narrowly missed by a speeding (~50 mph) electric car, passing at a distance of less than 1 foot from her left elbow. We stopped to talk to the ambulance crew, who were staring at phones in their laps, and explained that they nearly witnessed a fatality next to their vehicle because of where they decided to park, and they moved. Several more times on Mass Ave, we were forced to veer into the car lane to pass cars illegally parked in the unprotected bike lane.

OUR EXPERIENCE BIKING IN # BOSTON
The unspoken culture in downtown Boston is that if a car feels the need to park in a bike lane - personal vehicle, delivery vehicle, idle police cars and ambulances, some guy picking up Dunkins, whatever - it's theirs. There will be no repercussions for the driver. When police park in the lanes, so does everyone else. Somerville, Jamaica Plain, and Cambridge have less of this entitled car-centric energy, but it’s never gone entirely when the bike lane is just a strip of paint.

WHY WE LEFT BOSTON AFTER 8 YEARS OF ADVOCACY
Boston predates cars. Boston started as a human scale, people-centric city connected by meandering routes and ribbons of green. Those roots are still there, but the automotive dominance that other major cities have started to walk away from, Boston seems unable to shake. Mayors in New York, Paris, and Seattle have won landslide elections (and re-elections!) running on a platform of getting cars out of the heart of their city. Mayor Wu started off in that direction but has recently backed away from her earlier commitments, facing a re-election. We’ve been gone ten years, and downtown feels the same.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Louisa Gag’s death should’ve been more than an ample wake up call for Mayor Wu. She has examples around the world of other leaders putting people first, and winning. What else really matters?

Wowza, what an honor.

If you're in Oregon, please celebrate with me by getting dressed up ✨ for the Alice Awards on September 25, a benefit for safe routes to school and transit advocacy.

2 weeks in Boston and our family is headed home to Hood River.

It's symbolic that my favorite family photo is from the day we were caught in a warm deluge.

I have some highlights to share, including:
+ Somerville wins
+ Boston opportunities
+ Near death
+ Walden Pond day trip
+ Then and now
+ Underground school drop-off line
+ Cargobike share

To be continued...

Mass Ave Bridge has always been one of the best views of the Charles River skylines.

Now it's way better with a separated bike lane.

"the collective impact of this group is astounding"

We gathered an impromptu LivableStreets reunion and it felt really good to talk to each other.

For me personally, I was looking around the room, filled with awe and joy of the education I received from these folks.

We were missing many board members and staff from the past and current, especially one Louisa. But we held everyone there in spirit.

Tour de Streets is on October 24 and I am going to try my hardest to be there to honor the life of Louisa and transportation advocacy in Boston and Massachusetts.

2 days prior to our arrival in Boston, Bicycle Belle closed.

I ran into this family yesterday and we traded Urban Arrow and mom advocacy stories and the impact the owner, Carice, had on our lives.

Carice was a mom who biked with her kids well before me and her advocacy nudged me to be more vocal. Shortly after opening, she started Belles Who Bike, a happy hour. I have fond memories of many a gathering of ladies and children, who influenced the landscape of what Boston, Cambridge and Somerville look like today.

For Father's Day in 2014, I surprised Kyle with a Workcycles bakfiets from the shop. He still claims that riding this bike around Boston metro changed the way drivers treated him in a positive way.

Family bike shops are unsung heroes in the mission for livable cities. We will miss this one dearly.
