"can I give you a hug?"

Meet our first e-bike library borrower, a mother of 4, who learned how to ride a bike at 30 years old when her family moved to America.

She wants to use the e-bike to get to school as a teacher. Megan met her at Sol Rides to check out the bike and she rode with her home to show her the most comfortable route up the hill: Serpentine. She was overjoyed.

We can't wait to check in with her in 2 weeks to see how she liked it.

E-trikes are changing lives for rural communities. They are a social lubricant for the aging or mobility challenged.

Megan just ran into these 3 in The Dalles, Oregon, who were so excited to share their adventures, specifically on the waterfront trail. They even want to start a weekly social ride for any type of bike rider in The Dalles community.

For next summer, @bikebuddieshoodriver will work with @solridestours to offer E-trikes in our E-Bike Library and Discount program.

"In the face of rising personal transportation costs, Hood River’s Bikes Buddies and Sol Rides are teaming up to pilot residents’ comfort level with alternative means. Their new e-bike library and rebate program grants eligible participants a free, two-week test drive for daily transit, pre-curated to match their lifestyle.

Once the trial is up, if riders decide e-biking is a viable car replacement and meshes with their daily patterns, they can purchase the model they borrowed with a $500 discount, or $2,000 for qualifying low-income residents."

“Je bent niet van suiker gemaakt.”

Dutch for: “You are not made of sugar.”

It’s what parents, teachers, and other grownups say to encourage kids to stop complaining about the rain and get outside anyway.

Maybe it’s us adults who need the reminder.

As the students in Cascade Locks showed on Earth Day, kids can do more than handle a little rain. They can thrive in it.

Let’s celebrate the rain. We need it.

"Children in the community with light traffic created far more detailed neighborhood maps, 'drawing more of the streets, houses, and other objects.'"

In 2017, "Bruce Appleyard, urban designer and professor of city planning at San Diego State University, worked with groups of 9 and 10-year-old children from two suburban communities": one with heavy traffic and one with light traffic. He asked the children to draw maps of their neighborhoods including their homes and key locations like their school and playground.

The low traffic kids "produced highly detailed maps of their neighborhood street network that practically could have been handed to people asking for directions."

☝🏼from #LifeAfterCars, now a bestselling book 📖 in America.

Megan is building a Safe Routes to School program in Hood River County that envisions all children in low traffic neighborhoods, who can roam freely.

Thanks to @bicycle.law for producing this video series - more to come!

Kids of all abilities, whether they are in a wheelchair, skateboard, roller skate, bike or walk, should have a choice to create their own play without their parents.

That's why I do what I do.

"It's forced conformity. That's what's killing the kids. That's the real monster," Eddie Munson ❤️

Bike Bus kids defy conformity.

Last week, Megan presented for a Washington State Department of Transportation Quick Build webinar on 3 successful demonstrations for Hood River County Walk and Roll to School:

1) Elementary School Street for $400
2) Middle School Sidepath for $12,000
3) Elementary School path for $6,000

Since the demonstrations, 2 projects have been made permanent and all of them informed our City and County Safe Routes to School plans.
