Last Friday evening, a quiet refuge from Frieze emerged at St Paul’s Cathedral as family, friends, collaborators, and curators came together to celebrate the life and work of Bill Viola. The evening honoured the pioneering video artist, who passed away in 2024, with a UK premiere of ‘Inverted Birth’ (2014) under the Dome of the Cathedral. It also marked ten years since the unveiling of Viola’s video installations in the Cathedral, ‘Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water)’, 2014 and ‘Mary’, 2016, which are on long-term loan from Tate. We are so grateful to the speakers who offered reflections: Sandy Nairne, chair of the Fabric Advisory Committee at St Paul’s Cathedral and instrumental in the testing and successful installation of ‘Martyrs’ and ‘Mary’; Nick Serota, former director of Tate where he oversaw the acquisition of these works; Peter Sellars, who worked with Viola and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen on a groundbreaking production of Richard Wagner’s ‘Tristan und Isolde’; and Kira Perov, Director of the Bill Viola Studio and Bill Viola’s wife and long-term creative collaborator. The St Paul’s Cathedral Consort performed three beautiful and moving pieces to accompany the evening, generously supported by John and Susan Singer. We are incredibly grateful to Dean Andrew Tremlett, Canon Chancellor Dr Paula Gooder, Oliver Caroe, and the whole Cathedral team for making this event possible. by @billviolastudio
This Friday, October 16, St Paul's Cathedral will celebrate the life and legacy of Bill Viola. The special event marks ten years since the unveiling of the artist's video installations, Mary, 2016, and Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), 2014, on long-term loan from the Tate. Viola previously said that the two large-scale installations symbolize "some of the profound mysteries of human existence. One is concerned with birth and the other death; one with comfort and creation, the other with suffering and sacrifice... the final pieces will function both as aesthetic objects of contemporary art and as practical objects of traditional contemplation and devotion." Friday's event will feature short talks about Viola and his work, and an exclusive opportunity to view an additional artwork beneath the Dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, Inverted Birth, 2014. The viewing will be accompanied by music from the St Paul’s Cathedral Consort. 🔗 RSVP for the celebration of Bill Viola on Friday, October 16, from 6:30-7:30 PM at the link in bio. 📸 [1] Installation view, Bill Viola, Mary, 2016. The artwork #TheGreeting by Bill Viola (1951 – 2024), created for the US Pavilion at the 1995 Venice Biennale, will be exhibited from October 11, 2026, to February 6, 2027, in the most architecturally stratified, spiritually dense, and therefore evocative spaces of the Roman Forum: those of the Basilica of Santa Maria Antiqua, with its remarkable layers of Byzantine and early medieval frescoes. “The Greeting by Bill Viola in the Roman Forum. Opening on July 1, 2026, the Almaty Museum of Arts will present Bill Viola: The Space of Time, the first large-scale exhibition in Central Asia dedicated to the video artist Bill Viola. The exhibition brings together 18 seminal works spanning more than three decades of the artist’s career, offering a rare insight into the practice of one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. The project is realised with the strategic support of Halyk Bank. Organised in collaboration with Bill Viola Studio (Long Beach, CA), the exhibition is curated by Kira Perov - Viola’s wife, closest collaborator and Director of Bill Viola Studio. Viola approached video not as a screen-based image but as a space of experience, where light, sound, scale, and the movement of the viewer become as essential as the image itself. Across his practice, he returned to universal questions of life, death, memory, and inner transformation, shaped by both Western and Eastern philosophical and spiritual traditions. 🔗 Learn more about Bill Viola via the link in bio. 📷: BILL VIOLA, The Raft, 2004. – Bill Viola at the Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection Two major works by Bill Viola, ‘Fire Woman’ and ‘Passage into Night’, join Clair-Obscur at the Bourse de Commerce, open now. Drawing on some twenty modern and contemporary artists from the Pinault Collection, the exhibition traces a journey from darkness to light to explore the legacy of chiaroscuro as it resonates in the present day.  Fire Woman depicts a dying man’s vision: a dark female silhouette moves through flames, opens her arms, and falls into her reflection, which breaks into glowing waves of light. Passage into Night unfolds with a lone figure slowly traversing a desert landscape, her presence appearing first as mirage, distorted by heat and light, before growing in clarity. Both works engage viewers in a meditative encounter with light, time and shifting perception. The exhibition will be open until 24 August 2026. 🔗 Read more via the link in our bio. 📸 Bill Viola, ‘Fire Woman’, 2005; ‘Passage into Night’, 2005. by @billviolastudio
Bill Viola ‘Crossroads’ in Doha ~ As the art world gathered in Doha last week for the inaugural Art Basel Qatar, they encountered Bill Viola’s monumental installation, ‘Crossroads’, commissioned by Qatar Museums for Doha International Airport.  A spectacular work both in scale and in emotional resonance, ‘Crossroads’ reflects the movement and spirit of humanity, of moving between different people, of encountering different cultures. “There are two living streams that converge at the crossroads of humanity. One is of the present moment, the domain of ‘Now’, energy that is used to keep us moving, alert and functioning. The other is ‘Virtual’, that which has yet to be, and yet to become whole, the internal domain of memories, dreams, visions, longings, possibilities, chance encounters and random events.” - Bill Viola #billviola #billviolastudio #crossroads #doha #qatarmuseums by @billviolastudio

Opening tomorrow, Kukje Gallery in Seoul presents ‘Moving Stillness’, the first exhibition devoted to Bill Viola in Korea since his passing this past July. The exhibition brings together a wide range of works to celebrate his incredible life and artistic practice, anchored by ‘Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier 1979’ (1979). Of the work, Viola said, “the apparent solid, constant character of the image of the mountain is only due to a moment-to-moment coincidence of a set of factors, each independent and minutely variable.” The exhibition also includes ‘Information’ (1973), ‘Poem B (The Guest House)’ (2006), ‘Interval’ (1995) and ‘The Reflecting Pool’ (1977-9/1997). On view until 26 January 2025. 📸: Bill Viola, Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier 1979, 1979. #billviola #billviolastudio #kukjegallery #movingstillness by @billviolastudio
