*New cartoon coming Monday*
Almost every animated shot starts with me recording an embarrassing reference video. Then I identify the key frames and change the character’s proportions in the “scaffolding” stage. For this one I had to shorten his legs and torso a lot or the shot wouldn’t work.
After the scaffolding is laid down I start the rough linework, usually skipping a sheet each time and doubling back using the onion skins to get things lined up right.
When the rough animation is done I tie down the lines.

I exaggerated the placement of his legs and arms on each frame so that he’d look more like a petulant child throwing a tantrum. I used a single smear frame to make his arms look like they’re moving faster: essentially there’s a single frame where he has four arms, but two of those arms are at 50% opacity.

I finally got up the nerve to post one of my reference videos; thanks @todpolson for the pep-talk/inspiration!
The hardest thing for me to learn over the last few years has been how to change physical proportions into a more “cartoony” form and get things to look less “rotoscopy”. It hasn’t come easy, but I feel like I’m getting there.
I lowered his shoulders and raised his elbows to create a more extreme line-of-action and exaggerated the rotation of his hips and feet (and everything else for that matter). I also added more movement to the head and gave his punches more follow-through. My movements weren’t dynamic enough, so I had to exaggerate the positions on the key frames. This is animated in 12 frames per second (on 2’s) with a couple of 1’s on the punch strokes, for more of a snap.
