The three main loops of my September residency in Beetsterzwaag @kunsthuissyb – tessellating writing from the last year, folding paper and walking in the woods
I spent evenings mapping out the fiction project I’ve been working on since I started at @folgerlibrary last autumn, a trans-historical manuscript
A few new compositions – “ears” – appeared with paper, textile, oil and mushroom dye

Billy Morgan (b. London, 1994, UK/Cyprus) is an Amsterdam-based artist and writer. She moves between genre–performance, text, installation–to produce language-based constructions. These foreground a formal estrangement; narrative, relational, material. At their heart is a desire for transmission.

Billy Morgan (Londres, 1994, Reino Unido/Chipre) es una artista y escritora residente en Ámsterdam. Su práctica transita entre distintas formas, entre ellas la performance, el texto y la instalación, para producir construcciones basadas en el lenguaje a partir de extrañamientos formales en lo narrativo, relacional y material, en cuyo centro hay un deseo de transmisión.

Kunsthuis Syb is delighted to welcome artist Billy Morgan. Starting from 12th of September, she will be staying with us for a research residency that looks into dance-based revivalism and cultural recycling.

In her dance works, Billy takes gestures from diverse sources – social dance, medieval and present-day images of everyday life – in the belief that they carry a pre-existing social magic.

Like words, gestures act as conduits for language; they transfer a historical charge. During her residency at Syb, Billy will critically reflect on this relationship to the past and the parallel often drawn between the past and nostalgia.

‘The one (fem.)’, a piece of writing about my Artistic Research Fellowship @folgerlibrary this winter can now be read on their Collation blog

Includes a short fiction excerpt from something I was writing at the time, inspired by ‘The Women of Jeme’, a text about a Coptic town in Egypt, that describes how, in Coptic literature, women were referred to as a collection of miscellaneous parts, ‘more an absence than a presence’ by @billymorgn
