Exploring the ledges 💙🩵🩶
I’ve never been into swimming/beaches/oceans since I grew up in Colorado. And even after I moved away it was never my activity of choice, but it’s funny how our lives meander to different things later on and one random swim this year at a quarry led me on this little journey that ended up with me exploring something totally new. Never stop being curious about new things, you never know where you’ll end up. Thank you for the hospitality and it was great seeing you @nattiedoll and thanks to @aadivers for taking me out to dive

So grateful to have access to amazing places like this and be a part of a great community dedicated to keeping these unique areas safe from vandalism and destruction. It’s a privilege to assist in taking measurements of the water levels for further scientific research testing taking place to help with larger projects in other cave systems.
It’s always amazing where life takes you when you lead with curiosity and a sense of adventure and I love being able to share cool places like this on here with people who might never see stuff like this. This is Pico Volcano/ Piquinho volcanic cone which is the highest peak in Portugal at 2351m. Our guide took me and a group of lovely ladies up in the rain/snow at the crater, but we ended up getting lucky once we got to the top with everyone else gone and the clouds blowing off some. I had originally planned to do the overnight stay in the crater, but due to weather I was switched to a day hike that ended up working out even better since I didn’t have to sleep in a tent in the snow on what I thought would be a warm and sunny trip but was quite the contrary 🫠😅

We don’t get a lot of time, so spend it wisely with people you love doing things you love. Coincidentally posting this on Father’s Day from my trip to Pico Island last month on my birthday, and without my Dads influence I wouldn’t have had the experiences I was able to when I was younger and wouldn’t be the person I am now pursuing these adventures on my own. Try to be a good influence on those around you, support those who may need it, and inspire others by doing good things 🌱

Touching the Void as it were
After many visits to the entrance of this I finally decided to investigate this silica mine/cave/quarry? (It’s kind of a combo of all three things). But I wanted to see the spring boil up close that feeds the interior of this and runs out into the river. Water temp was 15°C and about 3m deep at the entry where the spring was. (A terribly chaotic video haha sorry) I thought my light would be bright enough to stick it in the sand and be able to see something but that plan clearly didn’t work. I also didn’t have any weights because I wasn’t sure if I actually wanted to get in the water so I couldn’t stay down long enough to explore more and ended up just kicking up a bunch of sediment and splashing Kyle and Isaac lol. This was a fun little exploration albeit short as it didn’t really go as far as I thought it would, but it’s the journey not the destination right 😅 Does this make me a cave diver now? Spontaneously book a trip to islands out in the middle of the Atlantic with zero research on weather or dive seasons ✅
Go anyways and find out is it not in fact dive season during your trip and also find out you will not in fact be wearing your cutesy little spring suit but two layers and still be freezing 😌

I think to start every year I somehow end up doing some weirdly hard and random adventure. This was definitely the one for 2025. Which I actually will explain because it’s so funny to me how these adventures happen. Last year I start following @cantrellcaving for cool cave stuff (duh) and somehow through him I start talking to @__ivan_the_terrible__ (and Kyle but he couldn’t come) and it turned out Isaac and Kyle live near me and also like caves and other cool stuff. So I randomly invite them over to explore a cave under my house last year, and we end up hanging out a few times. Then simultaneously, I have some random timeshare thing that I don’t even know how I got signed up for and i get to choose a place to go to, so of all places I decided to go to Gatlinburg. And of course it’s always more fun to do stuff with other people. So I decide I’m going to invite Alex, Isaac and Kyle to meet me there. then Isaac uses that as a good opportunity to meet Alex and drop a huge pit cave before we all meet up. So Alex (who I I am just meeting for the first time during this) and Isaac show up at the hotel at 1 AM after 7 hours of caving and three hours of driving before they get to me. Then we all get maybe six hours of sleep, I sit through a timeshare thing for two hours and then we immediately decide we’re going to go do an 11 mile hike and I decide to do it on mushrooms (bc I thought maybe micro dosing might be cool?? -foreshadowing: it was not) on one of the highest peaks In the smoky mountains, and we also get to the mountain and realize that it had snowed the night before. Mind you I don’t do drugs or drink and I honestly thought that maybe trying mushrooms would give me some sort of like life epiphany or something and when I tell you, I had the worst trip ever and was miserable the entire way up this hike I am not exaggerating in the slightest. So we somehow crush this hike even though I want to die, finally make it to the top and end up in some random group’s cabin at the and this lady is telling me about her divorce, we all take a group picture with them, then look at the nice view and then run back down the mountain partially in the dark. It’s almost dive season yay! Here’s a Chaotic open water dive with no fins 🥴. Definitely easier with a line and some fins for sure but I panic packed and don’t have time to pack dive stuff. Water viz was great considering the overcast day.
