One of my favorite things about teaching live is showing the whole process...including the awkward middle stages that usually never make it to social media.

In October, we’re painting Woodland Mushrooms inside Bindi’s Art Club...loose, expressive, a little moody, and absolutely no perfect drawing required.

We’ll let the watercolor flow, build texture, add playful marks, and create mushrooms that feel organic instead of overly detailed.

When a watercolor starts feeling flat, I don’t always reach for more paint.

Sometimes it needs a few lines, scratches, scribbles, or darker marks to bring back texture and movement.

Mark making is one of my favorite ways to loosen things up without overworking the watercolor.

Still learning soft pastels! This is one of the tutorials from @valeriemckeehan class. We started with a watercolor underpainting, and added a little shimmer too.
I don’t usually create a traditional underpainting, but the process felt familiar. It reminded me of painting abstracts starting with loose layers and marks, then allowing parts of them to peek through the finished piece. by @bindidesaiart

Painting loose and expressive doesn’t mean throwing paint around and hoping it works.
There are still choices behind every shape, color, edge, and mark. It just doesn’t have to look controlled or pertect.
That freedom is what I love helping other artists discover in my classes and inside my Art Club.
