Can distributed biochar projects access carbon credit revenue?

That’s the question we’ll explore at the July 1st Biochar On Site Monthly Meetup.

Topic:
Entry and Mid-Tech in Existing Methodologies: Selecting the Right Protocol for Your Distributed Biochar Project

Wyatt Catron of 3Degrees will share how flame cap kilns, mobile carbonization systems, and other field-based biochar approaches may fit within existing carbon crediting methodologies, including Climate Action Reserve, Verra, Rainbow, Isometric, and others.

Wihan Bekker shares how emerging digital tools can help practitioners collect and manage the MRV data these projects require.

For BOS practitioners, this has increasing relevance as Carbon credits may become a real revenue pathway that helps make local, place-based biochar work pencil out.

Hemp biochar from the whole plant, except the flowers. Commercial Cannabis farm conversion onsite from stalks to biochar Timelapse. This is some of the finest quality char for enrichment into soils. We provide Onsite conversion and enrichment services. When land owners don’t want the char we can also remove it from site #biochar #carbon #hemp #cannabis #fire taken in Penn Valley, California by @biocharonsite

Join our monthly meet up where @biocharcoalition Dec 3, noon, Pacific. They will share data from 3+ plus years of biochar projects in California woodlands and orchards. Biochar Coalition is a contender for the most biochar produced in flame cap kilns.

Video link can be found at biocharonsite.org/events-training or on our LinkedIn page.

Learn how the Biochar Coalition's work safeguards our ecosystems, by sharing their mission to scale workforces dedicated to smoke mitigation, and reducing slash efficiently and safely into carbon.

Their goals are to increase biochar creation by educating the public, communities, municipalities, academica, fire professionals, non-profits, industry leaders, land owners, W.U.I, forest, soil and watershed groups including ranchers, farmers and gardeners. Implementing the reduction of threats from excess biomass and inspiring participation with their seminars, workshops and job sites, they've created a lasting carbon imprint that will benefit future generations.

Biochar On Site is a civic group dedicated site based biochar production methods to improve and protect local ecosystems and communities using fire as a beneficial tool.

Join our October monthly network video meetup with Eric Mayer of Napachar presenting on "Mobile Biochar, Megaton Impact" and the economic opportunties of site based waste reduction using biochar production. We start at noon Pacific on Wednesday, October 1st. Everyone is welcome.

With a Stanford PhD in Environmental Engineering, Eric Mayer once modeled climate systems, until he decided to act on them.

Drawn to biochar’s hands-on promise & tangible impact, he launched Napachar. Now expanded from Napa to Sonoma, Eric and his teaam transform vines & slash into biochar for use on vineyards & local soils, turning waste into a tool for resilience.

Hear how Napachar's "Biochar as a Service" model uses low-cost, high-efficiency flame cap kilns to turn vineyard and forest waste into biochar on site for incorporation to soils, charting a path to megaton-level impact. Come see the Ring of Fire Kiln in action 🔥This Friday & Saturday at Pinebrook Park in Park City!
We will be making biochar with John — @gobiochar 🪵 This process safely locks carbon in the ground & out of our atmosphere 🌎 This is an effort to promote this sustainable form of processing forestry waste and organic biomass!

DM us with any questions or details!

Biochar can be made in many ways. Here we show the Ring of Fire and the Big Box Biochar kilns. They are both easy to use in field and process varying amounts of biomass. They RoF can process several cubic yards at a time and the Big Box systems can process up to 40 tons per day (two burn sessions, and depending on which size BB you build). They both maximize the efficiency of flame cap thermal processing to control emissions, have very low ember risk, reduce the biomass, and capture the carbon for use in local soils.

These systems reduce risk by clearing that hard to manage debris.

Big Box Biochar is an open source large fire box invented in Utah by Darren McAvoy, head of @utahbiomassresourcesgroup, and Associate Professor of Forestry at Utah State University. The BBB is on display at the 2023 CharPalooza event sponsored by @usbiochar USFS Rocky Mountain Research station, @ringoffireearth , @airburnersinc, the Utah Biomass Resource Group, and @kelpie.wilson. On this day we were highlighting 3 different systems for #BiocharOnSite. We had wind gusts up to 40mph that first day and didn’t throw any sparks! What an amazing education event attended by regional forestry agencies, fire teams, municipalities, and more.
You can find links to the Big Box plans on the USBI website and the USU website.
