We are living through the collapse of the capitalist patriarchy. 👑💰

But where does this system come from? How were the women of Western Europe, who once took care of and lived off the land, treated when the notion of commons was taken away and the idea of capital began? How did this colonial erasure then seep into the fabric of Aotearoa?

In episode two of Seeding Hope, lawyer, activist and writer Matariki Carr (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa, Pākehā) unpacks the past to help us chart the direction of our future, revealing why Indigenous knowledge was the first law of Aotearoa and how we make a return to that.

Seeding Hope episode two, streaming on YouTube and Spotify now.

In collaboration with @maearthstudio.

Their mission runs 400 years, because that is how long a Tawhai [beech] takes to reach maturity.

Six years ago Michelle and Nigel moved to the end of Boons Valley above Picton intending to run forest bathing retreats, and found 200 hectares that needed healing first.

Over this time: more than 18,000 natives established, 23 km of tracks cut by hand, recorded bird species risen from eight to 28, and shortjaw kōkopu are back in the stream. Last year around 325 volunteers gave almost 9,000 hours.

A lot of those hands are young ones. Kindergartens, schools and student volunteers come to plant, trap and monitor, and what they carry away is not only a day outdoors - some leave with conservation careers.

Nothing on the land works alone. Plant a stream bank and the shade, the cooler water and the kōura [freshwater crayfish] all follow.

Naturalist John Muir, pictured in Yosemite Valley, put it this way: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” His campaigning helped make Yosemite a U.S. national park in 1890.

Three years earlier, Ngāti Tūwharetoa chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tūkino IV signed a deed so the sacred peaks of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu could never be sold - the beginning of Aotearoa’s first national park, and the world’s fourth.

Today in Aotearoa we have 13 national parks, each one hitched to the people who hold them.

The Seeding Hope podcast series looks at how and why Mana Wāhine Indigenous women are uniquely positioned to navigate the polycrisis we currently find ourselves in. 🌱

Across 10 episodes, Dr Jessica Hutchings shares kōrero with a diverse group of Māori women leaders, including kai growers, environmental activists, deep thinkers, poets and healers.

Through discussing why sharing, saving, storing and sowing seeds are vital practices that connect us back to the rhythms of Papatūānuku Mother Earth, each guest illuminates an alternative way - one that invites us to slow down and embrace tūpuna ancestral wisdom.

Our first guest is respected rongoā practitioner, trainer and advisor, Donna Kerridge (Ngāti Tahinga, Ngāti Mahuta) from @oraonlinenz.

Donna shares her insights about:
🫘 what growing from seed does for us and our relationship with the natural world.

🫘 how sharing seeds builds biodiversity.

🫘 what Mana Wāhine means to her.

🫘 why we should all support the Declaration.

Most farmers who want to plant trees hit the same wall. Pine earns carbon credits fast but does little for the land. Natives restore it, cost more and earn less.

At the end of a dirt road near Elsthorpe, Greg and Rachel Hart found a third way.

In late 2007 Greg cold-called Air New Zealand with an idea: turn Airpoints into trees. 85,000 went into the steep country over the next three years, most of them native.

Then came silvopasture. Rows of poplar and willow straight through the paddocks, cattle grazing the alleys beneath, planted dense enough to earn the credits natives alone never could.

Twenty years on: 135,000 trees, fertiliser needs halved, more carbon stored than the farm emits. Farmers now drive from across the country to walk the rows, including the Mangaroa Farms crew, who took the plan home to the Hutt Valley.

Something special happens when we take something as small as a seed, and nurture and care for it. 🫘

That’s the kōrero shared by Donna Kerridge (Ngāti Tahinga, Ngāti Mahuta) of @oraonlinenz during the first episode of our brand-new podcast Seeding Hope, hosted by Dr Jessica Hutchings (Tūhoe, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Huirapa, Gujarati).

A respected rongoā practitioner, trainer and advisor, Donna shares her insights about what growing from kākano does for us, and explains why when growing something so small, it reconnects us with our kai, our relationship with Te Ao Tūroa and each other.

Seeding Hope is an Aotearoa-produced podcast, made in collaboration with @maearthstudio. Across 10-episodes, it weaves together Indigenous knowledge with practical insights from a diverse group of Māori women leaders, including kai growers, environmental activists, deep thinkers, poets and healers.
The purpose of the podcast is to inspire all people around the world to stand up for seed and soil by signing the Mana Wāhine Indigenous Women’s Declaration.

Head to #linkinbio watch the first episode and sign the Declaration. We’ll be dropping a new episode every Monday.

Our relationship with Papatūānuku is inseparable from our own wellbeing.

Our friends at @mangaroafarms reflect this understanding in the way they work with the soil, nurture biodiversity and grow healthy kai in relationship with the living systems that sustain us.

Our relationship with the Mangaroa whānau goes back to the early days of Tīwaiwaka. It was an honour to wānanga together over the past week, sharing knowledge, deepening relationships and learning from the whenua and one another.

Ngā mihi aroha to the Mangaora and @biometrust.earth families who made this time possible. And a special acknowledgement to @gparker.art who has woven our connection to life over the years.

“Nō te oneone te tangata, ka hoki mai anō ki te oneone”

“Man is made from dust, and to the dust, we will one day return.”

For the past two summers, @undergroundfestivalnz has been growing among the vines at @greystonewines in Waipara - Aotearoa’s festival of soil, food and farming.

What began as a pilot in 2025 became, by February 2026, a paddock of tents and teepees, farmers and their families making the trip. There were talks from soil microbiology to agroforestry, food stalls, local makers and artisans, and tours around the farm. Speakers featured the likes of Dr Jessica Hutchings, Jodi Roebuck, Jules Matthews and Renee Raroa & more.

In 2027 the festival heads north.

On 10 - 11 March, UNDERGROUND lands at Wholly Cow @whollycowbutchery in Te Miro, near Cambridge - a regenerative sheep and beef farm with native forest plantings, plus a micro-abattoir and tannery.

Two days, 40+ speakers, 30+ sessions. Talks, paddock walks, workshops, feasts, camping and music. See you in the paddock.

Wendell Berry wrote these words in 1977, in his book "The Unsettling of America". What gives them weight is that he then spent nearly fifty more years on the same few hundred acres - working them with horses, writing more than forty books, and constantly refusing to be somewhere more important.

The world lost a great man when he passed recently, aged 92, at his home in Port Royal, Kentucky, on land his family had farmed for seven generations before him.

He had studied at Stanford before taking a prestigious position as an English professor at New York University - but soon left go back to the farming life; people called it the end of his career. He thought a person ought to belong to a place and be answerable to it.

Berry's writing was an endeavor in slowing down, and noticing his surroundings – whether these were trees, people, or the imprint of a breeze on a hill.

His argument never changed: land is not a resource, it is a relationship.

Within reach of anyone walking to or from the Wellington hospital, Natural Leaders has planted a food forest at Newtown School.

Recently a team of rangatahi worked together to plant dahlias for beauty, potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes for the community to dig up themselves, and cover crop scattered alongside a path mulched for children to enjoy.

As a syntropic planting, dense and layered, the area is designed to build soil as it grows, teaching grafting, seed sowing and bushcraft to young hearts and hands along the way.

The same regeneration is the point for the young people doing the planting. Natural Leaders works with rangatahi carrying intergenerational trauma, and the exhaustion of inheriting a world they did not break, fostering young change makers in the Wellington Region with a regenerative focus.

Their vision is a food forest in every school in the Wellington Region. Here in Newtown is the first.

Mangaroa Farms recently featured in Issue 11 of @ontheland_mag in an eight-page spread about the farm and the question it keeps asking: what does the land want to be?

The article covers the 1,200 acre project holding a market garden and orchard, a farm shop, a sheep and beef operation, local events, and 700 acres of pine in transition back to native forest.

On The Land looks at the people on the ground at @mangaroafarms, from the farmers who are restoring soil through adaptive grazing, to the team simultaneously opening an on-site butchery to serve the local community - to the market gardeners to the shop keepers, and the storytellers & events team - who can all trace their relationship with the project back to the soil.

For Mangaroa Farms, the measure of success is simple: if the Mangaroa river is healthy, the team knows they are doing a good job.

Issue 12 features:
- Tara Benedict's @wildwood_farm regenerative pick-your-own flower farm in Taupō on the cover,
- @kiwihomesteaders - a Bay of Plenty couple teaching traditional craft alongside te ao Māori
- Growing and cooking perennial food forest vegetables with @permadynamics
- Forage bush kai with @sam_the_trap_man (an extract from his new book)
- Processing roosters with @gillian.swinton
- Growing brambles with @thefoodfarmnz
- Crafting a hunting bow with @threycameronarchery
- Making liquid feed with @edible.backyard

From December @ontheland_mag becomes a quarterly seasonal journal.
