New rider spotlight: Karin

The aMTB 2026 weekend camp at Horseshoe Valley Ski & Golf Resort from Oct. 2-4/26 was in a couple of words “life changing” . It wasn’t entirely about adaptive biking, although that was awesome, but more about the huge sense of community and the normalcy of living in a wheelchair and taking part in a sport that I have always loved. From the variety of bikes to choose from to the expertise from the Reps from the sponsoring companies to finally the absolute support and encouragement I received from the coaches and volunteers alike made this weekend an event that I want to be a part of every year from here on out.

Community in Action

This past weekend, SCMBC, Peace & Wheelies and Simcoe County came together to support the Hand Cycling of Canada event at Horseshoe Valley Resort, and it was nothing short of inspiring.

A huge shoutout to event organizer Jen Gad and to all the incredible volunteers who helped make the day such a success — and an extra big thank you to Mark from Total Sports in Midland, who went above and beyond to keep one of the riders rolling.

One participant, Andrew Kooger, a former DH rider, was getting back on his Bowhead (he’s had it for five years but barely ridden it) and needed a few setup adjustments before hitting the trails. Mark rolled in with his van, tools, and expertise to make it happen.

As Mark explained:
“The Bowhead bikes have an articulating front end, which at low speeds makes them tough to keep upright — but that same articulation is what allows riders to tackle off-camber and off-road terrain. We installed stabilization bands to help keep the bike balanced. His bike didn’t have the mount threads for the bands, so I drilled and tapped holes to install them.”

Once the work was done, Andrew headed into Copeland Forest with a few SCMBC / Peace & Wheelies members and a Hand Cycling Club of Canada able-bodied rider to learn adaptive trail techniques — including riding “pin out,” allowing the bike to articulate freely.

Within no time, Andrew was confidently shredding singletrack and smiling ear to ear — a reminder of what makes our community so special: support, inclusion, and the shared love of the ride.

As the Hand Cycling Club of Canada says: “More butts on bikes.”

We couldn’t agree more — we love seeing more people able to enjoy the forests we all ride.

THE HANDCYCLING CLUB OF CANADA recently hosted its second annual Spring Adaptive Mountain Bike Weekend at Long Point Eco Adventure Centre — and what an incredible weekend it was!

This event would not have been possible without the amazing volunteers who showed up in every role imaginable: ride guides, sweeps, support riders, mechanics, and even chefs — keeping everyone safe, supported, well-fed, and smiling all weekend long.

A huge thank you to the Port Dover Lions Club, Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise, the incredible crew and management team at Long Point Eco Adventure, and the Turkey Point MTB Club for being truly top-tier hosts and supporters of adaptive riding.

We were also excited to debut HCC’s first official program bike — a Bowhead Rogue — funded in part through the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund. This is a huge step forward in helping more riders access adaptive mountain biking opportunities.

Our next tentative event is a group ride at Mansfield Outdoor Centre on June 6!

The Bowhead nano chair is an absolute game changer. Having the autonomy to board a plane on my own felt amazing. Headed to @crankworx with the best Ontario crew.
