This is a test image, just to see how I feel about it. And one I have not shown before. I don't necessarily like the idea of posting images directly into Metas AI program for their use. So here we are.

Let me know what you think.

Matted down double crested cormorant. A beautiful bird with eyes like sapphires. Too often ignored by people being snooty about bird rarity. Stunners. (Digital photo used for zoom in)

Matted a print of this goldfinch today. 8x10" or 20cmx25cm for those of you who don't speak silly units.

Northern Shoveler in Portrait. these ducks are usually quite shy, to catch it close and tight was great. I love that you can see the little teeth/whiskers on the edge of its honking gonzo.

Expected to get through my migration shots sooner, but here we are

Spring migration was the name of the game for the last few weeks, so we'll have some musings and start with an early shot of a blue winged teal. Low to the water, skimming through the reeds I was fortunate to have good low access to the area. The reeds really do the heavy lifting on this shot and give us a 'world' not a bit of water, to exist with the duck in.

This year was pretty good, lots of days of good volume, but also a lot of very uncooperative subjects, or just things staying way up in trees.

I've become pretty picky over the years about what I am going to take photos of, but it isn't in the way you'd think. Great shots, not simply record shots of 'rare' birds. The community is pretty saturated with pictures of birds, up close, filling the frame and to be blunt, these are low hanging fruit. The often don't make a very good photograph, and they don't tell us much about the subject.

It's always the constant calculations, what's the background, where in the frame do I want the subject, will this even make a good photograph that are going to determine whether or not I bother. Colour, shape, line, form, light, and framing are all going to play into that decision if I want to spend my time there or simply 'list' the bird and move on.

I've also adjusted some of my visiting habits, as some parks have grown and changed and offer a lot less than what they used to in terms of good photography opportunities. To use a baseball analogy pitched by David 'you don't have to win every game, but you want to play every day'.

So as I continue to drag my crispy husk and gear around, I actually take less and less photos every year. But this is a good thing overall, less work culling and in post after. Less of the home work relative to the field work. This part is good.

So I'll go through my 'keepers' from the month and post some as I work through them.

Hunting for a watercolour life

This least sandpiper started as a high key shot... Then I fat fingered a slider (dehaze) and ended up with this effect and I am absolutely loving it. The granularity and colours that came in are reminiscent of a watercolor, particularly one by @bumbiesbrush . So I kept it, as this is a way more interesting result than otherwise. Sometimes we end up odd places, and exploration can be worthwhile, even when it's accidental. Another tool for the chest.

Dunlin, this normally adorable little tennis ball decided he wanted to look mean and pose for a metal album cover

A chestnut sided warbler. Surprisingly, this warbler is often very lacklustre in photographs, never quite living up to expectations.

But here we are, and this one ain't bad.
