POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Our first trip to Singapore in 2009. Notably the last time I went to a zoo. Not that the Singapore Zoo was bad, in fact it is very well done, with great measures being taken to blend the animal enclosures and fences into nature. That said, the animals are still confined and it is all a bit depressing for me to watch animals in captivity. Jurong Bird Park was also outstanding with the opportunity to feed the starlings, but has since been replaced by Bird Paradise in 2023. The pictures also capture our feelings to some of the local beverages that we may or may not have tried.

One of the subjects of this reel is extremely photogenic, while the other one is well aware of which side of the camera he belongs. It is our 33rd wedding anniversary today, if you are fortunate enough to see me, please congratulate me on this landmark. If you see Sacha today please feel free to offer her your condolences…she has been through a lot. 😉

Three Frames, One Place: San Francisco.
My attempt at capturing the essence of my experience in places around the world in three pictures.

Cover: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
SFMOMA is a celebration of creativity, innovation, and the ever-evolving world of modern and contemporary art. Located in the heart of downtown San Francisco, the museum is as striking in the outside as the masterpieces housed within.

1. Golden Gate Bridge. For two days we couldn’t see the bridge at all…from ON the bridge, due to the fog shrouding the bridge completely. An icon of the American West Coast, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s striking International Orange towers, elegant suspension cables and Art Deco details create a stunning contrast against the blue waters…when you can see them.

2. San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Where the city’s rich seafaring history comes to life along the waterfront. Home to a remarkable collection of historic ships, including majestic sailing vessels docked at Hyde Street (Balclutha pictured)

3. Cityscape including Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill.
This picture most accurately captures the weather that we (and Mark Twain apparently) experienced in the summertime. Perched upon Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower is one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in 1933, the tower stands as a tribute to the city’s firefighters and is celebrated for its striking Art Deco design and vibrant Depression-era murals inside.

Three Frames, One Place: Nürnberg, Germany.
Trying to capture the essence of an experience with just three photographs.

Cover: Observation deck of the Documentation Center at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
The Documentation Center offers a sobering and powerful look into one of the darkest chapters in modern history. Housed within the unfinished Congress Hall, the exhibition explores the rise of the Nazi regime, the massive propaganda rallies staged here, and the devastating consequences of Hitler’s ideology. Through photographs, historical artifacts, and personal accounts, visitors are confronted with the realities of dictatorship, persecution and war. Walking through this site is a reminder of how architecture and public spaces can be manipulated to serve a political agenda, and why remembering the past is essential to protecting the future.

1. Winding through the heart of Nürnberg’s Old Town, the Pegnitz River offers some of the city’s most picturesque views, where medieval architecture, charming bridges, and half-timbered buildings create a scene straight out of a travel guide. One of the most enchanting spots is Liebesinsel (Love Island), a small peaceful island along the river that provides a beautiful setting to pause and take in the surrounding scenery.

2. Congress Hall of the Nazi Party (taken from Dutzendteich Lake)
The Kongresshalle in Nuremberg, stands as a monumental reminder of the ambitions of the Nazi regime. Inspired by Roman architecture, this enormous, unfinished structure was designed to host Nazi Party congresses and accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. Today it remains as a historical landmark to the lasting legacy of the regime. Nearby, Dutzendteich Lake offers a striking contrast, with peaceful waters, green surroundings, and scenic walking paths that belie the areas dark past. Together the Kongresshalle and the lake reflect Nuremberg’s complex history.

3. Bergstraße, Tiergärtnerorplatz; Old Town
In the heart of Nuremberg’s Old Town, Bergstraße leads into the enchanting world of Tiergärtnerorplatz, where medieval charm seems to linger around every corner.

Three frames, one place: Edinburgh, Scotland. Trying to capture experiences with three pictures.

Cover: Victoria Street
A street straight out of a storybook! With its sweeping curve of colorful shopfronts, charming historic architecture, and old cobblestone streets, Victoria Street is one of the most picturesque corners of Scotland’s capital. Often associated with the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, this enchanting street is filled with independent boutiques, cozy cafés, and unique shops tucked beneath its beautifully curved buildings. Every turn offers another postcard-worthy views.

1. Greyfriars Kirkyard.
We took a haunted tour of Edinburgh which included a visit to Greyfriars Kirkyard. Centuries of Edinburgh’s history lie among weathered gravestones, ornate monuments, and ivy covered stone walls. Dating back to the 16th century, this atmospheric cemetery is steeped in stories, legends, and a touch of mystery. It’s famously associated with Greyfriars Bobby, the loyal little dog said to have guarded his owner’s grave for 14 years.

2. Piper.
A bagpiper playing in front of the High Court of Justiciary.

3. Edinburgh Castle
Perched dramatically atop Castle Rock, an ancient volcanic outcrop overlooking the heart of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle stands as one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks. With a history stretching back centuries, it’s imposing stone walls, historic towers, and commanding views over the city tell stories of royal intrigue, fierce battles, and Scotland’s fight for independence. Rising above the surrounding rooftops, the castle dominates Edinburgh’s skyline. taken in Edinburgh, Scotland by @birdtrude88

Chicago by night. We took the dogs with us for the weekend. Neither one of them cared for the elevators in the hotel, Hope in particular pretty much glued herself to the wall once we got out of the elevators. Also had the chance to see Operation Mincemeat…again. If you are into musicals, I could not recommend this show highly enough.

Spent the weekend in Chicago. Great weather as we head into Fall. Stretching out into Lake Michigan (I think that is what we are still calling it), offers spectacular views of the Chicago skyline. Once a shipping and military facility, the pier has evolved into a lively gathering place filled with restaurants, shops, entertainment and the famous Centennial Wheel.

Up close and personal with the UW Marching Band at the UW Homecoming Parade. The weather broke after three days of rain to provide a pretty mild night, with some outstanding performances.

Thailand 2009. Most people on a cruise on the South China Sea get to Thailand and spend time in Bangkok. We were faced with a choice though, stay in Bangkok and sleep on the ship….or we could take a bus and boat right to the Bridge over the River Kwai, and spend the night in a hotel room…not on the sea…not rocking. Chronic seasickness won out and we took the night on terra firma. A complete contrast to Bangkok (I assume), but some beautiful scenery and a very interesting museum made the trip a success…all things considered. One day I will fly into Bangkok and spend some time.
