Goggles has been making friends in Wetland Waders!

When eggs are abandoned by their parents and birds hatch in an incubator, they might take a bit of time to be introduced to their family. Keepers do everything they can to make sure new chicks or ducklings are not attacked by any resident birds, perhaps seen as a new threat.

Goggles, our young spectacled eider, has been introduced to the other birds gradually. Residents include waldrapp ibis, African spoonbills, pied avocets and, of course, the other spectacled eiders.

So far so good! Go and say hello to Goggles in Wetland Waders here at Birdworld.

In case you missed it!
The Bank of England has revealed which UK wild animals were voted to appear on our new bank notes, and two of them are birds!

Here at Birdworld we currently house 5 beautiful barn owls; the species that was chosen as the most popular bird in the UK. We're very excited to see the new notes when they appear.

The second bird chosen was the adorable puffin, which won the marine animals category. While we don't have any puffins at Birdworld we absolutely love them and we're very happy that they won their category! by @birdworlduk

Our Senior Keeper and Penguin expert Natalie found a lovely little intruder this week - check out this common toad who wanted to make friends with the African penguins!

Common toads are protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981, and they are also a friend to the gardeners - eating many a slug and snail which might be after their precious veg. Thousands of toads are killed on roads in the UK so drive carefully people!

Squid and Kraken aren't the only pair in Penguin Beach who have found companionship. Memphis and Damisi (Da-mee-see) have been bonded partners for years, coming back together for each breeding season.

Their little ones include Kraken himself, Squirt, Des and Becky!

Visit our African Penguin colony at Penguin beach to watch their winter breeding progress. We never know who's going to lay eggs and who isn't; some of them hatch, some don't, only time will tell!

🍄‍🟫 Happy UK Fungus Day! 🍄

Today we're celebrating all things fungus!
Fungus can be incredibly important - many species recycle the nutrients of dead plants back into the soil. And of course some species are also very tasty to animals and humans (but don't eat anything you're not 100% certain of ☠️)

Because we've had such a dry summer you might see less fungus than usual out and about, but keep your eyes peeled - especially in damp woodlands where you might just spot a toadstool or two!

Fungus is FABULOUS!

Anyone noticed a nest?

If you've visited Penguin Beach recently you've probably seen the amazing nest built by pair Squid and Kraken. African penguins in the wild will burrow in the sand under rocks and plants to shield their eggs from the hot sun, and keep them safe from predators.

This adorable pair have built a fabulous nest under one of our nest arcs, proving that a blind penguin (Squid!) can live a totally normal life in captivity. Of course this doesn't mean that the pair will breed, but it's still great to see that they're exhibiting normal penguin behaviour.

And the icing on the cake? Today is Kraken's 7th Hatchday!!
