Wow. Luli is amazing being interviewed live for Coastal Cleanup Day which is being put on by the company she works for- I Love a Clean San Diego. So proud of her for her poise and presence- and the work she does with Love SD. If you are in SD there are 100+ clean up spots. Sign up on their website if you are local 😀 by @birdyharrison

Good things happen when you make time for art.

We've known that for over a decade but right now, these are the final days of our Spotlight Artist exhibition at The Studio Door.

Challenge you to get out of the house to step inside the gallery and experience the work in person. You may discover the piece that changes how a room feels. You may simply find something that changes your day. Smiles are free.

Alla Bartoshchuk • Matt Gunnell • Birdy Harrison • Laura Lehman • Chuck McPherson

Come see what connects with you. If a work moves you emotionally, this is the moment to support a local artist and take their artwork home.

Spotlight Artist closes Friday, September 18. Saturday we begin to transform our space to bring you HOPE, a visual arts exhibition.

Something changes when a gallery fills with people.

We’ve watched it happen for twelve years.

We put the artwork on the walls and live with it for weeks. Then we bring the artists and the public together and suddenly we start hearing conversations about the work that we woud have never expected.

That’s one of our favorite parts of the exhibitions at The Studio Door.

Saturday night, we get to do it again with SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS.

Alla Bartoshchuk, Matt Gunnell, Birdy Harrison, Laura Lehman and Chuck McPherson each have been given a part of the gallery to show off their own work. Now we want to see what happens when we fill the rest of it with people just like you.

If you’re looking for something to do Saturday night, come spend a few hours with us.

See some art. Meet the people who made it. Wander through the studios.

SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS RECEPTION
Saturday, August 29 • 6–9 PM
The Studio Door • 3867 4th Avenue • Hillcrest

Come help us make it a great night. ❤️ taken in San Diego County by @birdyharrison

You don’t have to understand art to have an opinion about it.

I think people sometimes forget that.

You don’t need to know art history or particular techniques. You don’t need the right words. And you definitely don’t have to like everything hanging on the gallery walls.

We’d much rather have someone look at a piece and say, “I don’t know what’s going on here, but I want to know more.”

That’s where it really starts.

SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS is particularly good for that because you aren’t seeing just one piece from each artist. Alla Bartoshchuk, Matt Gunnell, Birdy Harrison, Laura Lehman and Chuck McPherson each have enough work on display for you to get a sense of who they are as artists.

And Saturday night, you can actually ask them face to face any question that pops into mind.

Come with an opinion. I promise you don’t need an art degree.

Sometimes you walk past a painting. Sometimes it won’t let you.

We see this happen at The Studio Door more often than you might think.

Someone comes in, walks around the gallery and then stops in front of one piece. Maybe it reminds them of something. Maybe it’s the color or the subject. Sometimes they can’t really explain why.

They just know they want to spend more time with it.

That moment is one of the things we love about being in a gallery. You never really know which artwork is going to connect with which person.

Our current SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS exhibition gives you a lot to discover, with five artists showing larger selections of their work.

Alla Bartoshchuk • Matt Gunnell • Birdy Harrison • Laura Lehman • Chuck McPherson

This Saturday night, they’ll be here for the reception.

Come meet them and spend some time with the art.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST • BIRDY HARRISON

Birdy Harrison builds her encaustic paintings through layers of wax, pigment and heat, creating surfaces filled with texture and emotion. Her work explores vulnerability, relationships and the complicated ways we connect with one another.
