Myla Flores of The Birthing Place and @welcometomaryam has been announced CNN's Champion for Change for her two decades of work serving families in the Bronx and fighting for birth equity. Through The Birthing Place + Foundation, we're en route to building a birth center — the first of its kind in the Bronx — to ensure safe, culturally-centered, and joyful births for Black and Brown families. 💜

A note from Myla:
"I’m humbled and grateful to be recognized as Abby Phillip's Champion for Change. I serve families as my passion, day to day, including today. All the while we have been working very hard to bring the Bronx its birth center. This work is about birth and reproductive justice, and we MUST increase access to individualized, collaborative and compassionate care our community deserves. We're so thankful for the amplification and hope greater exposure will help bring people and resources together to make this vision a reality."

National Midwifery Week deepens our appreciation for a recent conversation Reimagining Maternal Health Collaboration at @anew_hq in collaboration with @worldconnectus

We gathered doctors, midwives, doulas, researchers, community leaders, and advocates dreaming together about what better care looks like. Powerful timely conversations and convenings in other places show evidence of how so many of us —individuals and organizations — want to work together to create changes we'd like to see ✨🦋💜

Our last event at Anew, Meet the Midwives, we centered the wisdom of many midwives in our community. This time, we widened the circle to include physicians in leadership roles, alongside midwives and doulas — and the question became: "what becomes possible when we work together?"

We discussed needs that families have expressed: stronger connections between providers, support that doesn't end at hospital discharge, and care shaped by community! We also named what's in the way — chronic underfunding, racism, lack of childcare, time and access to providers.

We have far to go, yet many programs and practices inspire us, internationally and in NYC. What resounds is that ✨Midwives have always been the bridge✨ between clinical care and community care; evidence and intuition; hospital and home. Honoring midwives this week is also honoring collaboration with them. Recognizing our challenges that need attention, while seeing possibility in the power of what the midwifery model of care can offer our communities.

Thank you to our panelists Dr. Abosede Lewu, Emilie Rodriguez, Dayna Hernandez, Dr. Janice Aubey, Dr. Heather Irobunda and to everyone who shared so generously. Thanks to Anew and NYC Connect for your passion interest and support to make this gathering possible.

Reimagining maternal health starts with reimagining how we work together. Midwives show us how, with families at the center. Let's keep listening as we build relationships, grow possibilities, and re-design systems.

This commission came into my life one week after I found out I was pregnant. The timing felt surreal and what started as a conversation about creating a painting for @welcometomaryam quickly became something much more personal.

I told @drcarlawilliams about my pregnancy and the coincidence. We later scheduled a zoom call that at the time, I thought was to discuss the painting. Instead, I found myself on a call with @drcarlawilliams , @birthingplacebx , @claribxmidwife , and @nur.midwifery , being offered resources and guidance for my pregnancy. I remember how emotional it made me to feel so seen during that call. I immediately knew this was where I wanted to receive my prenatal care. During my visits I was given options and care that helped me understand how my body was changing, I was able to ask questions without ever feeling rushed, and felt assured that my safety and my daughter’s safety were a priority. They unlocked a world for me that I didn’t know I had access to. It gave me a glimpse into the incredible work of birthworkers and introduced me to a new community that changed my perspective on pregnancy and birth.

I wanted so badly to finish this commission before my daughter arrived, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I finished it during postpartum and what initially felt like a delay ended up being a gift. Working on this piece became part of my own healing and helped me reconnect with myself.

It is an honor to have this painting hanging in a space that made such a positive impact on my pregnancy and on so many other families in the Bronx.

The beginning of October will always be a time I cherish, for my daughter and for the beautiful memories made with my birth team. Deep gratitude to:

At Maryam, we create safe welcoming space for our LGBTQ community to access reproductive healthcare, like pap smears and STI testing. Getting GYN services can often involve discomfort or shame if without a provider that understands and uplifts the queer spectrum.

Join us Oct 15! We have pap-smear and/or STI appointments with spaciousness to feel seen, heard, and cared for in an environment that honors your safety, needs and identity.

Midwife Claribel has availability from 10am-5pm for GYN care. Teammates Natalie, Elizabeth, Danielle, Myla and student midwives are also available from 10am-8pm for Rapid STI Testing, counseling, with options for a midwife follow-up.

A special component of the event takes place 6-8pm featuring our wider community, trivia, games, prizes, community art and live music!

We share key goals, to:
- Create a safe space for the LGBTQ community to access reproductive healthcare services
- Provide pap smears and STI testing and reduce barriers to care
- Ensure appointments allow enough time so patients feel heard and comfortable
- Build continuity of care and develop long-term relationships
- Offer fertility services to support LGBTQ individuals to start and grow their families!

A beautiful gathering💛

Thanks to all who joined us @welcometomaryam to celebrate the unveiling of Stephanie Vidal’s artwork. Birth workers, community supporters, and Conscious Birth Collective doula alumni came together to witness this art piece, hear Stephanie share the story behind it, and working through her Matrescence – a profound time of developmental, psychological, and physical process of becoming a mother. Together we celebrated the care and the community that inspires our work.

Community is the source of how we will bring our collective vision for a Bronx birth center closer to reality. So THIS month (and while supplies last), we are excited to offer:

*Prints of this gorgeous art to donors gifting $150* or more in support of @birthingplacebx Foundation’s mission. *To contribute, visit our bio or bit.ly/HelpBuildOurBC*

Have an idea for how we can move this vision forward? Send us a message.

Wonderful night in NYC screening “Allowed to birth” and having an incredibly meaningful conversation.

Big thanks to @abbyepsteinxoxo and @rickilake for joining us, as the women who paved the way for so many birth documentaries with their timeless “The business of being born”.

Thanks to Myla Flores @birthingplacebx for all her hard work to bring more midwives and birth centers to the communities.

Hoping to see you again, New York. 🗽

NYC's screening of "Allowed to Birth" by Jacinta Lagos is SOLD OUT this Thursday, Sept 24 at 6:00 at Quad Cinema with special guests Ricki Lake & Abby Epstein!

The Birthing Place Foundation is sponsoring local Birthworkers to attend as well as helping to elevate "Beloved Birth 50 by 50"—a nationwide initiative working toward the goal that by 2050, 50% of babies in the U.S. will be born with the care of midwives.

We’re grateful to offer tickets to Conscious Birth Community mentees and alumni — and TBPF's network of midwives, student midwives, doulas and birth workers. We’re grateful to have all of us join this experience! > 25% of the audience are NYC birth workers which makes great conversation to follow.

We look forward to sharing an evening of film, connection, and conversation! by @birthingplacebx

What I love most about this program is the way it holds space for all of us—birth workers, parents, and families—meeting us where we are and helping us grow. 🤎
As a facilitator, I’ve witnessed firsthand how powerful it is to create bilingual, culturally relevant spaces where our families feel truly seen, supported, and held.
And as a mother, I’ve also been able to lean on this community during my own postpartum journey. Being able to receive support while also supporting others has been such a beautiful blessing.

Familia Flourish: Breastfeeding and Beyond is a partnership between The Birthing Place and Doulas en Español, providing postpartum and lactation support, mental health resources and tools, referrals, and follow-up care for new mothers and families. Through a network of trained Spanish- and English-speaking doulas, we’re creating spaces where families can receive support for both their physical and emotional needs.

✨ Come experience this community for yourself!
I’ll be facilitating this Wednesday, September 23 from 10:30 AM–12:30 PM at:
📍 Maryam Clinic
3307 Rochambeau Ave
Bronx, NY 10467
Come connect, learn, share, and be held in community. 🤎
