An intersection in Itoshima I'd often cross to get to and from the train station (and the local cafe with the best matcha latte I've ever had). It was a long-ish walk back to the house but I looked forward to seeing this group of red-roof farm houses and yellow fields during sunset.

On my Substack, I share my latest sketchbook roundup where I try new (for me) painting techniques.

It’s been 84 years since my last post, 😂

I’ve had my head down working on my graphic novel project and other fun things that will be announced in the near future.

I have been posting more often on my Substack, so if you’re inclined, head on over to see some recent work and read my musings on art and process, including a tour of sketches inspired by trips to some of my favorite museums.

This sketch is from @groundsforsculpture. I was struck by this enormous terracotta planter sitting atop worn, stone steps among tall grasses and slithering vines. Like an ancient deity ravaged by time but still present, witnessing us.

Drawn with Gansai Tambi watercolors and @carandache Luminance color pencils.

Mixed-media painting of one of the many gardens of el Real Alcázar in Sevilla. 🪴 El Real Alcázar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a former Islamic-era citadel turned historic royal palace of the Spanish royal family (still used by them to this day when they visit the region). If you ever find yourself in Sevilla, do yourself a favor and visit this landmark.

Kept this piece to a limited palette of colors using @holbeinartistmaterials Acryla Gouache, @carandache Luminance color pencils, and a handful of Neocolors II. taken in Real Alcázar de Sevilla by @bisforbeguez

Spent the afternoon at my local park and drew a few quick plein air sketches, using oil pastels, watercolors, and MUJI highlighter markers.

The results from the Watercolor Monotype Weekend Workshop I attended at @svaprintshop, led by visual artist Francesca Strada. In order to paint with watercolors, you need to rub gum arabic onto plexiglass (you can also sand the plexi, you essentially need to create a textured surface so the watercolors have something to hold onto). Watercolors (and/or water soluble pencils and crayons) are much easier to use, as the usual oil-based inks are messy and you need to work fast while the inks are wet.

My three monotypes were inspired by photos taken while in Japan this past fall. 🍂 🗻🌾 Highly recommend taking this workshop next semester! taken in SVA Printshop by @bisforbeguez

This Shinto Shrine ⛩️ was a mere hundred steps away from my artist residency lodgings in Japan. I meandered up the stairs, sometimes out of breath, through its many red Torii Gates all the way to the top of the mountain, revealing a stunning view of the rice paddy fields and the mountains in the distance. I felt so very lucky to be able to experience this shrine by myself, surrounded by nature. It inspired many of us and the work we made at the residency.
