We had a blast and enjoyed meeting everyone at MoCCA ’23!

Many thanks to the Society of Illustrators and their crew for producing another fantastic show. We always have such a wonderful time at MoCCA.

Also, a big thank you to all of the @MFAVN alumni, students, faculty and staff who worked at the tables and made it all possible. There are too many to thank here, but you know who you are.

Finally, to our @RisoLAB staff, artists in residency and volunteers who did an amazing job working the tables and running demos so attendees had a chance to see their work published on the Risograph Duplicator. Thank you!

If you didn’t get a chance to attend or stop by the tables to find out more about our low-residency visual storytelling MFA at the School of Visual Arts, reach out in the DM. Applications and a few spots remain open for summer 2023, so don’t hesitate to drop a line!

On June 29 we had a signing at East Side Mags in Montclair! Comics/cartoon contributors in attendance: @bisforbeguez, @mikedawwwson, and @katschneids. @ohflannery, who drew the cover illustration, and writer Michael Gabriel also attended. Thank you to everyone who came out! East Side Mags has been so supportive of the book—thanks Jeff for hosting us and for everything else! If you want a copy signed by everyone who was there, be sure to stop by the store, we left behind a whole stack! #newjerseyfanclub

It’s been a really fun two weeks since #NewJerseyFanClub came out! I’ve been driving all over the state for readings, panel discussions, and signings at bookstores, libraries, and theatres with other book contributors. It’s been really special, and I’m very grateful for all of the partnerships that made these events possible. So much of my time working on the book was spent alone at my desk, so I was really excited to finally meet contributors face-to-face. It’s also been so great getting to meet readers—so many friends, family, and strangers showed up to the events and left with copies of the book. I’m going to be posting more on @jerseycollective next week, but I wanted to share a couple of pictures from road. We have two events on the calendar still—July 7th at @thunderroadbooks and July 23rd at @thecornerflemington!

Sometimes it’s hard to put into words the value of something. I want to help you sustain change, not just make an immediate one. My clients are able to finish what they start and then use what they learn in other spaces.

Tell me in the comments what space is the hardest for you to sustain? ⬇️

"Don't let the low-residency nature of the program fool you: You need to have self-discipline and be ready to work hard." - Alexandra Beguez (‘16) Freelance Illustrator and Cartoonist

Soon after graduating, Alex's discipline and hard work paid off with recognition from The New York Times for a collection of stories she contributed to titled ‘Guantanamo Voices’ (Abrams). The anthology by writer and editor Sarah Mirk made the paper's 'Best Graphic Novels of 2020' list.

‘Guantanamo Voices’ collects interviews from 10 people whose lives were inextricably affected by their time and proximity to the infamous prison, including former prisoners, lawyers, social workers, and service members. Alex’s chapter tells the story of Matthew Diaz, a military officer and lawyer, who while working at the prison made the extremely difficult decision to leak the names of Guantanamo detainees.

Alex also dove into an ambitious project titled 'Famous Ladies', celebrating the achievements of notable women who have paved the way for all of us, one portrait at a time.

Alex’s awards include Society of Illustrators, Illustrator 62 Annual; Latin American Illustración 7, Selected Winner; Korpúlfsstadir Residency, SÍM (Association of Icelandic Artists) in Reykjavík, Iceland; Latin American Ilustración 6, Chosen Winner; 3x3 Professional Show No. 14, Honorable Mention; General Scholarship, Fine Arts Work Center.
