Some things deserve to be ghosted. 🤭😜

Especially the rules, routines, and subtle behaviors that keep your eating disorder running the show.

The tricky part? You can KNOW these patterns are keeping you stuck and still struggle to change them.

Recognizing the pattern is important. But recovery happens when you start practicing something different, even when it’s uncomfortable.

So, which one are we šŸ‘»ing first? šŸ‘€

How many times have you told yourself, ā€œI’ll start tomorrow,ā€ only to find yourself having the exact same conversation with your eating disorder the next day?

Here’s something I wish more people understood about eating disorder recovery:

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ Having a plan and having a strategy to actually follow through with that plan are two very different things.

You can KNOW you need to rest, eat consistently, challenge a food rule, or stop compensating.

But when the moment comes, fear, guilt, anxiety, and a whole lot of convincing ED thoughts can make following through feel nearly impossible.

And suddenly, something you were so sure about yesterday becomes a debate all over again.

This is why I focus so much on what happens BETWEEN knowing what recovery asks of you and actually doing it.

Because sometimes the missing piece isn’t more motivation, more information, or even more insight.

It’s having a strategy that accounts for what happens when recovery gets uncomfortable.

And that’s something you can practice and build with the right support.

šŸ¤ šŸ’ I’m an eating disorder recovery coach, and helping high-achieving young adults bridge this gap is exactly what I do through my 1:1 coaching program.

How often are you rearranging plans around food or exercise? Feeling guilty for resting?
Struggling to be spontaneous because it interferes with your routines?

You can be incredibly successful in life and still feel completely stuck in recovery.

And just because you’ve learned how to function around your eating disorder doesn’t mean that’s as good as recovery gets.

You deserve a life that’s bigger than managing your eating disorderšŸ’

šŸ“²DM ā€œSTUCKā€ if you’re looking for support moving beyond simply functioning with an ED and toward a life that isn’t controlled by one.

You can know exactly what recovery asks of you and STILL struggle to follow through.

And sometimes, that’s the most frustrating part.

You know you don’t need to compensate for eating more than usual, but the urge is still there.

You know taking a rest day is okay, but the guilt makes it feel anything but okay.

You know your food rules are keeping you stuck, but breaking them feels terrifying.

ā€¼ļøKnowing something and being able to put it into practice are two very different things.ā€¼ļø

And that’s why I talk so much about the gap between knowing and doing in eating disorder recovery.

Because at some point, recovery becomes less about gathering more information and more about learning how to respond differently when the fear, guilt, and discomfort show up.

That’s where these 5 strategies come in.
They’re practical ways to start working on the behaviors that keep you stuck, even when you already know better.

And you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. šŸ¤

I’m an eating disorder recovery coach, and helping women turn what they KNOW into what they actually DO is exactly what we work on in my 1:1 coaching program.

šŸ’Œ DM me ā€œKNOWINGā€if you’re ready for support putting recovery into practice.

Maybe you believe recovery is possible.
Just...not necessarily for you.

Because you’ve been struggling for too long.
Because you’ve tried before.
Because you know what you’re supposed to do and still can’t always get yourself to do it.
Because every time you make progress, there’s another rule you realize you’re still holding onto.

And after a while, it can get really fucking hard to imagine that this won’t always be part of your life.

I get it.

For more than 10 years, my eating disorder was woven into almost everything I did.

There was a time when I genuinely could not imagine being a person who just...ate.
Rested.
Changed plans.
Lived in her body.
Went through a hard day without immediately turning back to the ED.

I couldn’t picture a life without it because I had never known myself without it.

And now?
The life I couldn’t imagine became my actual life.

So if you’re reading this thinking, ā€œYeah, but you don’t understand why it might not be possible for me...ā€

I won’t argue with every reason your ED has prepared.
I’ll just leave you with this:

You haven’t met every version of yourself yet.
And I really hope you give yourself the chance to meet the one who gets to find out just how much life exists beyond this.
Recovery is possible for you, too. šŸ¤šŸ’

I was really f*cking good at my eating disorder.

And as a high-achiever, I think that mattered more than I realized…

There were rules to follow.
Things to accomplish.
Ways to feel disciplined, successful, capable and in control.

So when other parts of life made me feel like I was failing, the ED was always there with another way to feel like I was doing something ā€œright.ā€

Which made recovery really confusing.

Because suddenly, doing the right thing meant doing everything my ED had taught me was wrong.
Eating more.
Resting.
Breaking rules.
Being flexible.
Not compensating.
Not ā€œfixingā€ what I ate.

Recovery required me to tolerate feeling like I was doing a bad job, while actually doing exactly what I needed to do.

And I think that’s an important distinction for high-achievers in recovery:
Feeling unsuccessful and actually being unsuccessful are not the same thing.

Sometimes the recovery win is letting yourself feel behind, disappointed, inadequate or out of control without running back to the ED behaviors that make you feel accomplished again.

You don’t have to earn back the feeling of being ā€œgood enoughā€ through your eating disorder.

And maybe being a little worse at your ED today means you’re getting a little better at recovery. šŸ’

šŸ“²šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ Save this for the next time your ED tries to hand you a scoreboard.

One of the hardest parts of recovery is that the recovery behavior doesn’t always feel like the right behavior.

Sometimes it feels wrong. Unsafe. Uncomfortable. Like every part of you is screaming, ā€œNope. Go back. We don’t do this.ā€

And that makes sense when you think about how long you may have practiced the alternative.

If you’ve spent years responding to discomfort by restricting, compensating, checking, controlling, moving, avoiding, or following a rule, those responses have had A LOT of practice.

Recovery asks you to interrupt that pattern and respond differently.

To eat and not compensate.
To feel the urge to check and not check.
To rest while your brain tells you to move.
To break the rule without immediately creating a new one.
To feel uncomfortable without rushing to make the discomfort disappear.

At first, the new response probably won’t feel natural.

It’s new.

And I think this is where so many people accidentally use discomfort as evidence:

ā€œThis feels terrible, so I must not be able to do it.ā€

When sometimes what’s actually happening is:

ā€œThis feels uncomfortable because I’m practicing a response I haven’t practiced nearly as much as the old one.ā€

You don’t need the recovery behavior to feel comfortable before you practice it.

Sometimes you practice it while it feels uncomfortable until the new response isn’t quite so new anymore.

Keep going. Bite by bite. šŸ’

Planning ahead in recovery doesn’t always mean you’re being rigid.

Sometimes it means you know exactly what happens when you leave the decision up for negotiation.

You wake up knowing you need a rest day, but decide you’ll ā€œsee how you feel.ā€

You know you need to eat breakfast, but wait until morning to decide what sounds ā€œsafe.ā€

You know yesterday’s eating doesn’t need to change today’s plan, but wake up and let the guilt decide otherwise.

And suddenly you’re trying to make the recovery choice at the exact moment the ED has the most leverage.

One strategy I started using in my own recovery was making certain decisions before I was in that moment.

Not to control every detail of my day.

But to reduce the number of opportunities my ED had to renegotiate something I already knew was recovery-aligned.

Decide → make the plan → follow the plan when the discomfort shows up.

You don’t have to reopen the decision just because anxiety showed up afterward.

And THAT is an important distinction:

Planning ahead can create rigidity when the goal is to eliminate uncertainty.

But planning ahead can also support flexibility when the goal is to help you follow through on a recovery behavior when you already know the ED is going to fight you on it.

Sometimes bridging the gap between knowing + doing means making the recovery decision while you have enough distance from the urge to actually make it.
